Employees And Other Persons In Brake Vans

Employees when travelling as passengers must ride in the passenger compartments, provided there is room for them. In exceptional circumstances, such as Bank Holidays, race meetings, or foggy weather, employees may be permitted by the Guard to ride in the brake van in which he himself is travelling. This instruction applies to Guards except that when they are travelling as passengers whilst on duty, Eule 129 (xiii) must be observed.

Should employees, when proceeding to or returning from their work on any part of the line require to ride in the brake van of goods, milk, horse box or empty trains, the Guard may, if satisfied that they are employees of the Company and in the legitimate discharge of their duties, allow them to travel; but more men must not be permitted to join any such train than can be accommodated in the brake van in which the Guard is travelling without inconvenience to his work.

Chief Cashier's Pay Clerks conveying wages cash, Station Masters travelling with cash between stations under their control, members of the Company's Police Staff in uniform travelling in charge of bullion or specie, and Chief Mechanical or Electrical Engineer's maintenance staff requiring to give attention to defective equipment, etc., in the vehicle, may be allowed to ride in a brake van in which luggage, mails, milk, or parcels, etc., are being conveyed, even though a Guard working the train is not travelling in the same brake van.

Except as provided in this instruction, no passenger or employee, even though the latter may hold a brake van pass, may be allowed to travel in a brake van in which luggage, mails, milk or parcels, etc., are being conveyed, unless a Guard working the train is travelling in the same brake van. Guards in charge of trains will be held responsible for seeing that this instruction is strictly adhered to.
Employees travelling by train (other than Guards travelling in the execution of their duty), must in all cases hold a pass covering the journey and, except as provided above, must not be allowed to travel in brake vans, unless such pass bears the following endorsement:
" Available in Guards' brakes of *    trains."
*" Passenger and Goods," " Passenger " or " Goods," as the case may be.

Employees, other than Guards travelling in the execution of their duty, Chief Cashier's Pay Clerks conveying wages cash, and Station Masters travelling with cash between stations under their control, must not be allowed to travel in brake vans of trains in which a traffic cash box treated as a value is conveyed.
