The blind couple

I often go by railroad. Because I must be on the move professionally a lot, I am on the move also on almost all sections. On the journey from Berlin to Leipzig the train is used to capacity always especially well. I let myself mostly book my place, so that I must not stand in the way.

On the journey about which I want to tell here virtually every place was taken in the train. I rose in Berlin in the train and sat in a closed compartment with six places. I looked successively at my fellow-passengers. It lasts always some minutes till one to itself on the place has furnished and has taken the perfect seat position. Towards me sits a young couple. Both keep mutually to the hands and look everybody for themselves down at the ground.

Finally, I understand that the both are blind. They have filed her white blind person's floors on top in the filing. They travel with a lot of luggage which is stowed away likewise exemplarily. How have they created all that? There the other fellow-passengers will probably have helped? The young man and the young woman are about eighteen years old. I estimate them at least so about at this age. My daughter is also at this age, I consider and do not leave it which fallen in love both to observe secretly to young people.

They talk the whole journey exceedingly quietly and considerately. Generally they handle much more deferentially with each other than one knows it of other young people. Both have clamped her legs firmly under the seat not to hinder the other travellers and not to claim too much place for themselves. Just to the young man who is approx. 1.80 metres the knees must already hurt. I would say to him with pleasure that he should stretch his legs quietly a little bit in my direction, however, does not trust me, because I do not want to interfere anyhow. So I sit and listen - unabashed - to the both with the narrative.

I hear out that they were on a vacation with a group of blind youngsters. It must have been very nice. Up to a joyless meeting. They evaluate both the meeting with other, sighted youngsters. I must find out that they were insulted at the railroad station Berlin by the youngsters. The young woman became, from one of the swearing, angespuckt. I can hardly touch what I hear there. Above all, I cannot touch in which quiet tone both blind people evaluate this thing. They are disappointed, disappointed, however, without fury and rancour, but just.

To me the tears rise in the eyes. However, I must hold back them, because the compartment is of full fellow-passengers and now, nevertheless, I can burst out crying impossibly. Also the other travellers look embarrassed. Although the young pair whispers, everybody has probably listened here in the compartment and now is hard concerned. I would say something to the both with pleasure, however, is to be appealed again too cowardly them. I have regretted this behind over and over again.

Shortly before Leipzig come along both ready for the climbing out. They take her blind person's floors, these open out, feel her luggage and provide it. Everything happens quietly and with a lot of consideration for others. I try to help anyhow. However, this is superfluous, because they make everything alone. I likewise get out in Leipzig and look to the both the platform still for a while behind. If I see again them, I appeal to them, however, really. Nevertheless, I must say to them anyhow, how much me her kind and her contact have impressed with each other.
