Snow banks on the railroad line Vienna - Hegyeshalom

Not only in our austrian alps, but also in the level east of Austria, in particular on the main distance Bruck a. d. Leitha - Hegyeshalom in Hungary the snow complicates the railroad company. For days the wind blows, grows up to the hurricane-like storm and blows him to metre-high snowdrifts together.

The railroad stations, rails and points have soon drifted away, high snow drifts tower up and solidify in the icy cold to a steel-hard mixture of ice, snow and earth, they to by do not break soon any more is possible.

This often for days incessantly raving blizzard is it which allows to become this piece of the Burgenland every now and then a white hell.

In winter, 1928/29 already in the general one was exceedingly strict, he became apparent especially in the Burgenland in disagreeable way.

The blizzards divided in several phases which recurred almost regularly every month and let off steam in more or less strong, lasting for days raging. Therefore a laborious clearing with steam locomotives was necessary every winter month.

The most terrible one of the blizzard disasters was in the Jänner and February, 1929. The collateral lines had soon totally drifted away. A maintained of the train traffic on these local railroad distances was hopeless at times as a result of the furious blizzard .

One had all trouble to maintain the international holiday traffic on the main distance Vienna-Budapest. Because the snowy catapult was required for the time being urgently in the mountain Arl, one had to manage in the distance to Budapest at first with impromptu snowplow journeys. This occurred with two steam locomotives, equipped with fixed snowplows, coupled tender in tender.

If these snowplow journeys also had, because they were always used on time, in the beginning the desired success, this stopgap been not enough for the duration because continuous snowfalls and snowy activity, in particular the road incisions drifted away near Parndorf in the shortest time over and over again and made the distance unmobile.

The railroad station Parndorf and his next surroundings belonged to those places which were probably struck most badly by these dreadful blizzards. This railroad station lies completely unprotected with a ridge and, hence, is completely revealed to the gale from the northwest direction.

Thus were necessary to the cleaning of points and for moving of the same 30 minutes every now and then. Parndorf came along as a crossroad railroad station not in consideration. The distance segment of Bruck new village to village Zurn thereby became so long that between the single train journeys too much time passed by and the next countermove or subsequent train already again had to master invincible snow.

Keeping the distance was connected with big difficulties. Especially with difficulty, nevertheless, it was to get going a train remained lying on the distance again. In the shortest time the train had drifted away about the axes and carriage for carriage had to be exposed in laborious work.

This destiny (fortune) also overtook a Budapester express on the 28th February.

In spite of immediately tackled snowy clearing it was possible only after 17 hours to remove the hindering snow drifts.

Even more badly it went out to a Budapester night express 1st March, 1929 which got stuck with the home signal of the railroad station village Zurn in the there one strongly blown away road incision and was in one hour totally blowed (breezed).

The attempt to pull back the express to Hegyeshalom likewise did not remain possible. Thus one had to resign himself to heat the stopping train with the steam locomotive well and to supply the travellers located in the train by errands with the necessary provisions.

Because the second leg of the journey of the express was not possible as a result of the high snowdrifts, was tried to free the second distance rail between with the snowy catapult to bring a spare train till the height of the snowbound express to release afterwards the travellers from theirs awkward and not safe position.

After some houres hard day and night work this task succeeded. On the 2nd March, 3 o'clock in the morning, so after 24 hours, the travellers changed on the distance arrived in the railroad station.

However, of going on from there was not to be thought, because the distance had drifted away completely. Only during the next day the second leg of the journey of the express could occur to Vienna.

In so involuntary way in the railroad station held on travellers of the express expelled itself the time with card games and song. Alternately Hungarian and Viennese songs sounded in the carriage.

Outdoors on the distance it looked hopeless at this time. The desert activity of the blizzard required from the road employees almost supernatural strains and perseverance. The military had to be pulled up again for the help achievement.

All employees of the railroad stations, from the board of directors up to the last worker, helped to release the rails from the snow banks with the soldiers of the military.

Also the train team was taken in the journey by the trains hard, especially when to the weather report to no faith was given and the train companions was not dressed in the journey warmly enough.

When the frights of these long winter months were past and the spring with thousands of cherry flowers wrapped the land in tender white, the whole distance drew a deep breath made easier.
