Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter
Indiana
Jones
in Indiana Jones and the
Kingdom
of the
Crystal
Skull
, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

Would you people shut it already.
People have been screaming for a new
Indiana
movie for how long now???
And all people do is b**** about every aspect of the movie.
What's the matter?
Did you really set your expectations that high???
"He's too old"
"The story sucked"
This sucked, that sucked, everything sucked.
Were you expecting a life changing experience?
It's an action movie!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I'm done ranting.
Why am I giving Indy five stars?
Quite simply.....I loved it.
And I was sober when I watched it. :P
I saw the original three, the first one was awesome.
The second one with the nonstop screaming blond was ok but she was enough to drive me to drink at an early age.
The third one was better than two but not as good as the first.
Crystal
Skull
?
WAY better than two and three and easily just as good as Raiders.
Indy may be old but he still does the role with ease.
The story was interesting enough and the plot which everyone says is lame was actually quite good.
Derivative yes, but still good.
Spielberg proves yet again why he is considered one of the best Hollywood has ever given us.
The cinematography is gorgeous, the acting, the FX....everything about this movie screams excellence.
Try to compare this to the latest Mummy movie and see for yourself how a good action movie is made.
What didn't I like about Skull?
The Russian aspect is sooooooo old!!!
The Russian woman with the three stooges hairdo was just..............annoying.
But other than those minor complaints, the movie was first rate from start to finish.
Welcome back Indy, the world really did miss you despite all the haters.
It's a great movie, a great way to introduce yourself to the Indy series, and honestly I hope they make a ton more.
Yes, even if Shia is in it, he may be an annoying twerp but he did a great job in Skull.
A class A action movie from beginning to end and one of the best action movies Hollywood has produced in years.
Highly Recommended!!!

Yay Indy!
I and my daughter really enjoyed this movie. We've been waiting a long time, and playing the Lego
Indiana
Jones
while we waited, which didn't spoil the flick a bit. I am shocked that Harrison Ford can still do the stunts, and well! My daughter hasn't seen the original three, but I think she's a fan now :) It was really satisfying to see the ending [which I won't spoil for those of you who haven't seen this movie yet]. Now, if they'll just get together and make another Star Wars, we can cheer again!! I'm hoping for more after this one.
For the uninitiated, Indiana Jones is an archaeologist who teaches at a university that finances his searches for antiquities. The search usually means danger with a lot of funny lines during the action. Harrison Ford, who plays Indy, also played Han Solo in the six Star Wars flicks. Both the Indiana Jones series and the Star Wars series are meant to bring back the shoot-em-up action with defined heroes and villains popular in the 1940's. I find the genre refreshing, and feel good about sharing it with my grown daughter. I recommend that PG-13's only be shared with the 13 and older crowd. There was one scene I couldn't watch, but I had plenty of cues to turn away [dramatic music, violence that gradually progressed].
We would be happier if special effects weren't QUITE so realistic, but that's us [and we feel that way about EVERY movie we watch]. This movie is a wild, fun ride from start to finish and I enjoy the humor very much. By the way, I thought it was fun to include a science fiction tie in, which Steven Spielberg didn't want in it anyway!

This DVD is missing two major components ...
COMMENTARY TRACK and DELETED SCENES.
After shelling out over twenty bucks for a two-
disc
special edition DVD, I expect a commentary track and deleted scenes. Or at the very minimum one of the two. But this DVD offers neither.
Now, I'm not going to delve into the debate over whether this is a good "
Indiana
Jones
" film. To be honest, I enjoyed it on its own merit, but it does not compare to the original trilogy.
With that said, the DVD release is a major disappointment to this long-time Indy fan. I will say that the making-of feature is impressive; most of Lucas' making-of features usually are, so it didn't come as a surprise. But it still left a lot to be desired.
The three-star rating is for the DVD itself, not the film - if you're here, you've probably already decided how you feel about the film. My advice to casual fans is to stick with the standard one-disc release. Hardcore fans might find the making-of bonus features worth it.
