The follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Yell Fire". "All
Rebel
Rockers
" is Franti's fiery protest music and thought-provoking lyrics backed by seductive elements of dub, infectious dance music, and irresistible hook-infused soul. Franti has toured and performed with everyone from U2, Dave Matthews Band, Ziggy Marley, and REM to Digable Planets, Cypress Hill, The Fugees, and A Tribe Called Quest. The deluxe verion contains a bonus DVD with 4 new Michael Franti videos
and a featurette on the making of All Rebel Rockers.
Not your average raggae!
When I heard Say Hey on the radio (read my comment to Emily's review) I was immediately intrigued. I checked out the Michael Franti/Spearhead catalog here on Amazon right away. Yell Fire has gotten great kudos from the Amazon reviewers so I bought it along with All
Rebel
Rockers
. Needless to say I've been listening to the two cd's all week. I actually enjoy the newer release better (contrary to a couple other reviews here). But do yourself a favor and make sure you own both of them!
I had some trouble playing Rockers in my car; for some reason it made bad clicking noises and skipped. I was able to play it on my computer fine, burned a copy, and the copy plays in my car just fine...go figure.
Can't wait to see these guys in concert.

Sly & Robbie work their magic again
None of the reviews so far mention the ESSENTIAL role played by Jamaican geniuses Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare in making this album worth its weight in gold. After more than 30 years in the business, Sly & Robbie (respectively on drums and on bass, Reggae's two most important instruments) continue to create divine music for us listeners. They outdo themselves with non-Jamaican artists and Michael Franti is the latest artist to benefit from their inspiration. Special thanks are in order for the riddim twins!
Solid, right on.
Definitely a good introduction to the artist if you're not familiar with his earlier work. The production is crisp without overdoing it and a few of the songs are great for dancing! His songwriting falls a little flat on some of the more "rock" songs but overall this album is completely worth buying!

Political party music?
I've been a fan of michael franti since his disposable heroes days. Actually the first time I saw him was before their album dropped. He opened up (by himself) for living colour at the warfield in s.f.. He was a force to be reckoned with and quickly got the crowd behind him. Impressive because a lot of people didn't know who he was and also he was basically doing a poetry slam reciting "television the drug/and socio-genetic experiment". My next experience was at a disposable heroes of hiphoprisy show that I ended up at by default because the nirvana show had sold out. They didn't disappoint probably one the top ten shows that i've been to.
After the heroes disbanded it was really hard for me to give spearhead much of chance. Home sorely disappointed me but I was partial to more aggressive music at the time. It just seemed to friendly music wise and a little dumbed down to his previous project. Needless to say i stopped following them until recently when i decided to check them out because a friend of mine was going to see them. I listened to most of yell fire on the bands website(check it out... it's very cool) and was very impressed. It seemed to be more of a balanced marriage of the pop and political sound he was starting to go in with spearhead. I got the album and think it's probably his best album period...
That being said it's hard to follow that up. The intensity and urgency on yell fire was drawn largely from his experience in the middle east which he shot a great documentary "I know I'm not alone". This was a life changing experience which was very intense. The new album seems to take a decided turn towards a pop/party political sound. I had a hard time with that at first but the album has grown on me with repeated listens. People with less predjudice as me have really liked it. It's hard not to like because anthemic and very hook laden. It's definetly pop but it's intelligent pop because you can get more and more out of it with each listen.
