Awesome!

I had my eye on the eee pc since before the 701 was released. I was just about to buy one when the rumor on the street was that a newer one was about to hit the market. I'm glad I waited. The 900 is perfect. I don't think i would have been as happy with the smaller screen. I also chose the machine with the linux as I have been curious for years about that OS. So easy to use and the open office software lets you read, write and transfer documents to/from Microsoft Office and PDF files as well.

To be clear though, this isn't a laptop for high volumes of data processing. I have an IBM laptop as well as a desktop computer for that. But I have left the IBM at home when traveling and it is so much easier, smaller, and lighter. I highly recommend the 900 to all of you not doing a lot of typing but using your laptop to surf the net and keep in touch while on the the road.

In additon it has all the little things that you need...webcam, movie viewer, media player, games (tetris fans, look out!), SKYPE.

Battery life is to be expected with a 4-cell battery. This is a non-issue for me as I am rarley somewhere without an outlet. If I was it would because I am camping, skiing or canoeing and don't give a hoot about computing!

It comes with a black neoprene sleeve so save your money there.

not perfect but good enough

I bought this little "netbook" for I didn't want to bring my 14.1' heavy laptop to my office every day. I already have a pc in my office, but I can't install any software on that PC. I use this netbook in my office for documents processing, checking email, chatting with friends, browsing internet, and sometime watching movies. It works quite well and could meet my needs. By the way, I installed XP on it soon after I got it. I'm not familiar with Linux. What I have to say is the touchpad which support muti-finger(3 fingers at most) is excellent, you don't need a mouse for most operation. And this is one reason why I bought this one. The battery is not that bad, can be used up to 2.5 hours if the cpu load is not very high. But it leaks around 10% a day, that's a problem. There're many software for this netbook on the internet, which can configue the cpu speed and many other things, it's great.

If you:
Don't want to bring a heavy laptop everyday, want a light one
Want to use the laptop for documents processing, chatting, browsing internet and things like that, which don't need a very high CPU speed
Have above average sight, for the screen is not that big, so the characters on the screen is also a little small
Fingers are not too big
Don't like to bring a mouse and would like to do most job on the touchpad
Want to start system in a short time ( SSD is very fast)

Then the EEEPC 900 is just for you.

I didn't buy EEEPC 901 or 1000 was they're too heavy. If a 10' laptop is 1.5 kilo, then I'll choose a 12' one. But EEEPC 900 is light, less than 1 kilo.

Something not that good:
Keyboard is small
Battery leaks 10% a day, it's a problem
CPU is slow sometime

After all, it's a great "netbook" to take out for office work or chatting and browsing internet.

Nice little laptop. Does what is says it does.

I bought this system as something to learn Linux on, and as a light alternative to my laptop so I can carry something around on the train without breaking my back.

The battery life on the unit is great. The screen is nice and bright. It's easy to both read text/info, and watch movies on. The wireless worked fine out of the box, and I was able to find and connect to networks wherever I took the thing (Did I mention that the battery life on this thing is great? I have been able to use it for upwards of 4 hours without plugging in).

I love the fact that even though the system comes with Linux, it comes with a CD full of Windows drivers so that you don't have to hunt and peck for them to get it working.

I was not a big fan of the OS the system came with. It's a little on the dumbed-down side, but I can see where it would be good for a person who bought this just for browsing the internet and doing a few tasks well.

For more advanced users, a quick search on the internet found a disto of Ubuntu linux made just for these things that ROCKS! It's easy to install and works like a charm with the hardware.

The only downsides I have found are the OS which I mentioned, and a small tendancy towards lag if you are doing several things at once. I would expect that from a system like this as it is not anywhere near as powerful as a full blown laptop.

Oh, one last thing. If you are a guy, and you know how to touch type, this unit may drive you a little buggy at first. The keyboard is not meant for bigger fingers. I find myself typing faster with the hunt-and-peck method.

Overall I am very happy with the unit. It was a great buy.

Eee - Slick little machine

Got an Asus Eee 900 with Linux/Open Office. Originally to use for myself to check e-mail etc., because the one family PC wasn't enough for all of us (4 students). I really like this little thing. My youngest daughter uses it to learn to type, and to submit her homeschool lessons on-line. I am using it to finish my on-line college degree, and e-mail type things. If you don't mind the small size, I think it can do just about what you want it to, and it is easy to carry around. I don't care about MP3 and that type of thing, so it isn't clogged with junk like that. Keeps up with what I am doing without having to kick anyone off the home PC. Have had it for about a month, so far, so good.
