the tea-addict's crackpipe

This fragile-looking device has numerous advantages over other tea-brewing methods. One, it's easy to see to see how dark it's getting. Two, the leaves get plenty of room to breathe. Three, it's easy to brew multiple cups with the same leaves. Four, the double-wall glass keeps the tea inside hot, while the outside remains cool.

Minor negatives: a bit on the small side, but as noted it's easy to re-brew. Several pieces to wash. Very fine leaf fragments will pass the filter -- not really a problem.

I have no complaints against it. You should however be very careful with it as to be sure it doesn't break.

Loose Tea Sippers Rejoice!

Having experienced mixed results with Bodum Pavina 21-Ounce Double-Wall Thermo Glasses (X-Large/Tall Iced Tea) (Out of a set of four I have managed to break TEN of them thanks in part to a long-suffering retailer sending out replacements), I was a bit dubious about the durability of this item but also curious.

Well, after a month of almost daily use, a month during which I cracked the tenth Bodum Pavina 21-Ounce Double-Wall Thermo Glass (X-Large/Tall Iced Tea), the product has survived intact, suggesting that the smaller the mass, the more survivable the Bodum. (However, I only used plastic utensils like a Light My Fire Spork in it.) Even better it works exactly as designed. The large infusion chamber allows for maximum tea leaf expansion, the clear glass sides make it easy to brew to "color", and the infusion chamber stores easily and safely on the upside down lid.

Defects? Well, 6-oz. doesn't hold very much; tea gulpers might prefer something like the 13-oz. Bodum The de Chine Personal Glass Tea Infuser & Cup instead. In addition as others have noted, the lid only fits on top of the infuser so that your uncovered cup will cool pretty quickly after you remove the tea leaves, and finer particles can pass through the relatively large slits in the infuser.

Note: care must be exercised when filling the item with hot water because the tea infuser sits on top of the cup. Overfill it and you will have hot water overflow unexpectedly onto your hand from underneath, which is a good way to end up dropping it.

Attractive, functional, but a bit small...

It's a three-piece set consisting of a small cup, lid, and infuser. It's functional with a simple and clean appearance for those that like the minimal look. The lid doubles as a coaster to hold the infuser after it's been removed from the cup as well as preventing too much heat from escaping as the tea brews. The cup has a double-wall layer of glass to keep the tea warm while keeping the outside cool enough to hold comfortably. The glass supposedly keeps the tea warm longer, but I have no idea how long the heat from the tea will be retained since I don't leave my drink out for very long. It does, however, do a nice job of keeping the glass outside at a temperature that's comfortable to hold.

The wide mouth of the infuser makes the cup look larger than it really is so I misjudged the amount of water to pour in, resulting in a slight overflow. That leads me to the main downside of this set: the cup is tiny and holds about the equivalent of a China teacup rather than a regular coffee mug. It's a minor inconvenience to rebrew and refill, I suppose; casual tea drinkers might be satisfied with the size.

The infuser has four sets of slits, rather than holes, on the bottom to allow the liquid to seep through though the slits are large enough that it doesn't catch all the tea leaves. You won't get giant clumps sifting through, but the production description is a bit misleading because leaves will escape to the cup. If you're finicky about stray tea leaves, then a mesh tea ball might be better. But otherwise, despite the size, the cup and infuser is an attractive set that works well.

A Concept in Progress...

The concept of a thermal tea-infuser is pretty neat. You get a 3-piece glass set:

1. A 6oz double-walled glass
2. A glass tea infuser/filter
3. A glass lid to retain the heat as well as act as saucier

PROS:

- Elegant construction and simple to use.
- All-glass construction with no contamination of metal particles.
- Borosilicate glass has low thermal expansion and thus more resistant to thermal shock similar to that of Pyrex and test tube and beakers at Science labs.
- Double-wall glass construction means the temperature of the drink is maintained longer.
- Double-wall glass construction also enables the outer glass to be cooler to the touch than the inner glass due to the space/air separation between the two.
- Clear glass enables you to see and adjust the amount of tea infused into the liquid.
- Very light and easy to maintain and clean.

CONS:

- 6oz of liquid only. Seriously. I'm not asking for a pitcher-size drink. I know this is meant to be for tea, but it would be more convenient to have a 9oz or even 12oz size infuser so I don't have to keep on steeping tea and wasting time waiting. Give us a larger size container with 6oz, 9oz and 12oz marking and let us adjust the amount of tea we want to drink that day.
- The photo of the tea infuser set in Amazon looks very elegant. In person it just looks and feels like another Science type of glassware.
- Like the other reviewers, I have a problem with the way the glass infuser/filter part was cut. There are very fine cuts which I would assume are hand cut leaving stress marks around the glass. If they can create a double-wall technique in glass-making, I would assume they have a better way of cutting thru the glass than what presently looks like small particles of glass can potentially be released while steeping my tea. That's just how I feel when I look at the small cuts.
- Also the way the filter is cut allows smaller tea leave to escape versus metal mesh filters which have a diamond cut pattern.
- The glass is light and also feels thin and flimsy. I'm afraid it can break relatively easy with a few bumps versus a ceramic mug.

OVERALL:

With the current price offering, I can only recommend this with reservations. Perhaps they should bring out a version 2 of this concept by:

- increasing the amount of liquid that it can hold
- place markings on the glass by showing 6oz, 9oz and 12oz sizing
- improve glass filter cutting by making a cleaner cut and a diamond pattern similar to the metal mesh tea filters/infusers

If the price goes below the USD20.00 mark, then it would be a better buy than it is right now.
