The Ugly Side of Punk in China

The common assumption about punk rock in China is that it is a natural reaction to, and subversive opponent of, the authoritarian government there. While this may be true for some punk rockers, Wasted Orient shows how one band, Joyside, see punk rock as an apathetic ethos. To Joyside, punk is about a rejection of the idea that one has to work and slave for a system that offers little for them. In other nations, this disaffection often manifests as rebellion and a somewhat constructive drive to confront the establishment. Here it manifests simply as disaffected Nihilism. To Joyside, punk is not about changing anything, but rather withdrawing from the game completely. This is a good lesson for those who might look at the growing popularity of punk in China as some kind of precursor to some kind of punk-rock democratic movement. When you exist in a state where there are few sanctioned tools for open dissent, sometimes your only tool for opposition is apathy.
