This is a fantastic machine. Trust me.
Seems expensive, but please add up your Starbucks expenditures for the past year and then buy this with no hesitation!
Many
espresso
purists turn their noses up at
super
auto
machine
s, but as someone who has owned a high-end non-auto machine, this
Saeco
will reliably produce a high-quality espresso shot with virtually no effort! With my manual machines the shots would vary in quality, and while at times I could produce a better shot on my own, it would require a lot of effort. This superauto produces espresso that is 100% reliably better than most but not all of the shots I could produce manually, and it does so with almost no effort on my part (add water, beans, empty dreg drawer, that's about it).
Oh, and definitely get the [optional] Milk Island, which produces a phenomenal microfoam, to the point that you can do some basic latte art with it; again not better than some I could produce manually, but consistently better than most I produce manually, and with no work at all!
This machine looks great, heats up INSTANTANEOUSLY (that's right, no waiting at all for a boiler to heat up), is fairly quiet (thanks to ceramic grinder), and produces espresso that is superior to anything you could ever get a Starbucks.
I also looked at just about every other superauto in the $500 to $1,500 price range, and in fact tried a number of them out in person. This particular unit was my favorite by a wide margin!
BUY THIS AND THE OPTIONAL MILK ISLAND AND NEVER GO TO STARBUCKS AGAIN! I'm serious.

Thought you couldn't have a delicious cup of coffee with no effort? Think again!
We got this coffee maker for my husband, who likes to drink a lot of coffee and expend practically no effort to prepare it / clean up afterwards. He already knew drip
machine
s were not for him - clean up after every use... So he had switched to a French press and got to like the bold flavor but that ended up being too much work still. After that he was only drinking "Turkish coffee" (i.e. dump the grounds in a cup and pour water over them) - that was about the right amount of effort but just didn't taste that great. Especially compared to his favorite "Americanos" at the neighborhood coffee shop.
SOO, when I saw this machine I knew we had to get it. We found it almost 50% off at an unnamed dept. store - so I have absolutely no reason to justify an expensive purchase by writing a positive review :).
I would not say it's cheaply made at all. The parts where it matters most use high-quality materials. I don't care if my water tank is plastic - it seems to be crack resistant all right.
The maintenance could not be easier - it cleans itself by running a bit of water through the system before every use (so the coffee never tastes stale) and all you have to do is empty out the grounds drawer and rinse the "brew group" about every week. Very easy.
My husband can make his americanos just by a touch of a button - the dispensing of extra water could not be easier. The switch to steam, just as easy. He loves the coffee and so did our guests - all major coffee fans.
And here's my favorite part. I didn't even drink coffee before we got this thing but now I will actually make a
super
light latte now and then. What won me over? The high-pressured, super-effective milk frothing system and the option to reduce the amount and strength of the coffee you brew. I can't think of a better investment and I'm glad I listened to my coffee-fanatic sister about going for the proven
Saeco
brand.

Great coffee, ok quality
Have been using this
machine
for a week now, and, most importantly, it makes outstanding coffee. I am not a coffee expert, but as a (now former) Starbucks regular, I can testify that I'd prefer coffee from this machine over Starbucks brew any day.
Other things on the good side:
- easy to install and simple to operate
- very fast, a great cup of coffee is always just a minute away
On the downside:
- Although the design is ok, the execution is a bit on the cheap side (for what I'd expect at this price tag) with plastic body and controls not having a feel of precision mechanism
- alarm indicators (too add water, add coffee, empty waste tank) are a bit cryptic and it takes an effort to figure out what this machine wants from you, maybe I'll get better at it with time.

Restaurant quality coffee
This thing makes delicious coffee ... my only knock is that it's a bit noisy when you have guests over
Beans only
I have had this
machine
for awhile now and have to say I absolutely love it! My only complaint is that it uses beans only. Some machines give you the choice of beans or ground coffee and this one doesn't. If your hopper is filled with great regular beans and you want a cup of decaf you have to manually clean out the bean hopper and load with the other beans. It really can be annoying. The other thing is that you would assume it would hold a little more water than it does. If you use the machine frequently you have to add water all the time. I never have mastered the art of the milk frothing for latte's (and I have the milk island) but I just haven't worked at it that much either. I am just so happy with the way I can get one great cup of coffee at a time with a great froth on the top that I don't really care and figure if I want a latte I will make it a treat from Starbucks once a week or so. Being able to adjust the strength of coffee is great too, especially if you have someone that likes it on the strong side and someone that prefers a weaker taste. One other thing...save your instruction manual because everytime you have to clean the thing out with the cleaner you have to refer to the instructions, at least I do, and that is a time consuming process that has to be done or the machine won't work at all.
Saeco
makes a great, sturdy machine but think about the bean option. Doesn't make me regret my purchase though.
