A different spin on seafood

The best-known brand of Belgian chocolates, in the United States, is probably Godiva, but I attribute that to the fact it was one of the first Belgian chocolate brands to start showing up in the United States, and they did some very good marketing. Godiva is good chocolate but, in Belgium, it is seen as just a half-notch above average. Leonidas is better chocolate, and so is Guylian.

What makes Guylian chocolates good? The main factor is, of course, taste. While there is nothing shy about these chocolates, there is a definite, strong chocolate taste, to the point that, when many Americans taste Guylian milk chocolates, they might mistake them for dark chocolates, until they taste Guylian dark chocolates. The Perles d'Ocean have a nice, definite chocolate flavor on the outside, and a creamy milk chocolate truffle filling. Some have a slight crunchiness to them, while others are luscious pureed hazelnut pralines. All of the sea shells, or Perles d'Ocean, taste like chocolates, but there are unexpected, subtle other flavors, that vary from piece to piece, including orange, vanilla, and hazelnut. I like the hazelnut ones best.

The second strong quality of Guylian chocolates is their texture. Some chocolates are waxy, some are mushy, and some are dry and hard. These Perles d'Ocean are none of those things; they are firm, but not dry or hard; they are creamy without being mushy or waxy.

Why are these chocolates called seashells or Perles d'Ocean? There are two reasons. The obvious one is their shapes are suggestive of seashells. But the second reason is more important. Every time a box of Guylian's Original Chocolate Seashells, a portion of the proceeds go to Project Seahorse, a group devoted to trying to preserve seahorses. Ingredients (from the box): Sugar, vegetable fat, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, chocolate liquor, hazelnuts, skimmed milk powder, soya lecithin (emulsifier), butter oil, coffee, artificial flavorings: orange-vanillin.

Heaven In Your Hand
