The Scott's classic reel mower is light, maneuverable, and economical. The business end of this push reel mower is solid, sharp, and everything a reel mower should be, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp steel blades that can be adjusted for nine grass heights with very easy wheel tabs. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, and 20-inch cutting width, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. There's no soft cushion on the handle, which is too bad, but otherwise, the Scotts Classic is a durable, well-constructed, simple device.

Scotts 20" Classic Reel Mower

I have about a one acre yard total, majority behind my house. I generally mow the back with my riding mower and push mow the front. I recently set up a croquet court in the back and bought this mower to use on the court. I now use it to mow the front yard and the court in the back. This mower does an excellent job mowing. A few things to keep in mind before you buy. The thicker the grass the harder to push. I have Bermuda grass. I mow about every third day in the height of the season. Also small twigs will stop the mower, but they are easily removed. Thirdly my lawn is relatively flat. I not sure how it would perform on hilly yards. It seems to be well constructed and mows perfectly right out of the box.

Delightful !

Not bad to put together. As one person said, it was easier to look at the picture on the box and apply logic. Being "assembly challenged" it took awhile, but I got there. Felt pretty good about it. I then went out to mow. Surprisingly it was easier than trying to start my gas mower, no bag to empty and then try to get on again, I do have a smallish grassy area in the front and side of my house, but even with twigs and leaves I encountered little problem. In fact, if I'm honest, I felt good. It was easy. No noisy motor or fumes, no worry if you have gas in the tank, perfect for me. I live in a wooded area, don't have the perfect lawn, but it suits me fine. Easy enough to do twice if you need to. I love this thing. I'm a retired female with a total hip replacement. Best therapy in the world being able to do it yourself.

Good eco-friendly mower; but not perfect

From reading the reviews, I thought this mower would be the panacea of all mowers. It is, indeed, very good. But, I have to provide an objective, balanced review.

Pros:

1) Quiet (but not silent) operation.

2) No gas or electricity. Very eco-friendly!

3) Push and go. Little maintenance.

4) Cheaper than other eco-friendly options like battery powered mowers or corded.

5) Easy for small lawns; produces a crisp, clean cut if you go over the area thoroughly.

6) Small size is good for storage.

I give it a high recommendation, but it is not perfect for several reasons:

CONS

1) It does not do well against edges of the lawn. This is because the wheels must touch solid ground to operate the blades. If you edge is against a curb, this will be hard to accomplish.

2) It will NOT cut weeds, tall grass, or wet/damp grass (it will somewhat, but not very well).

3) Twigs, debris, etc. will often clog the mower.

4) The grass clippings can be lodged on the back of the mower and will fall off into your garage (or wherever you store this mower). It is necessary to lift the mower and/or manually pull out the excess clippings.

5) The handle is not a single solid piece and, therefore, is a bit wobbly. It would have been better to have a single solid handle.

Overall, I would likely buy the mower again given the size of my lot. However, if you have 3/4 acre or more, this might be too strenuous if you are unaccustomed to it. Also, if you want a flawless yard or have some inclines, it may not meet expectations.

It is likely best suited for a 1/2 acre or less yard with only gentle slopes.

good when cutting short grass, but a pain with tall grass

we bought this when we moved into our new house where seemed like no one had taken care of the lawn after the purchase agreement was signed. It did not work at all because of the tall grass. It simply pushed them down without cutting any. We bought a gas mower right away to save the pain-(: However, we are keeping this one and use it sometime, it works fine when the grass is a little bit taller than what you wnat them to be, not as clear-cut as the gas mower though, but no noise at all, we can use it around the house when our baby is asleep.

Good for the Environment, Not So Much for Cutting Grass

This mower earns five stars for making you feel virtuous: no fossil fuels, no noise, no harm to the environment, and good exercise at that. However, on the question of efficiency, it's a different story. I don't mind the serious exertion it requires (my arms are getting stronger). But having grown up with a gas-powered mower, this (literally) just doesn't cut it. It gets hung up on even the smallest twigs in the lawn, it doesn't cut grass that gets too high, it doesn't do weeds well, and you generally have to go over the same section of lawn 2-3 times to get most of the grass cut. I'll stick with it for now, because I don't like the gas mowers. And I don't mind the uneven look of the lawn, as I'm not a lawn purist. But this mower is not for everyone. If you're more interested in feeling like a good citizen of the earth, get this mower. But if you want to cut your grass quickly and effectively, this might not be the right choice.
