In the spring of 1996, as Atlanta prepared to host the summer Olympic Games, an outbreak of syphilis struck a group of teenagers in the prosperous bedroom community of Conyers, Georgia. When epidemiologists interviewed the victims, they were shocked by what they heard: children as young as fourteen named scores of sexual partners, others told of all-night orgies and sex parties. Many of the children defied stereotypes, coming from intact families with economic advantages. In the words of one medical investigator, "you couldn't tell them apart from any other teenagers." In a series of intertwining profiles, Frontline uncovers the roots of the Conyers' syphilis epidemic and reveals a community struggling with teenage drug use, sex, aimlessness, and cynicism.

Why All the Surprise?

Parents who work 40, 60, and 80 hours a week, put the kids first, and look the other way should not be surprised when stuff like this happens. If I had abused my freedom this badly, my parents would have raised Cain. And maybe put me out on the street.

A riveting, disturbing documentary...

Most of the parents in this story were workaholics, consumed with social status. Rarely home to see what their children were up to, they showered them with material goods in order to salve their guilty consciences. Left to their own devices, their unsupervised children naturally ran wild. Starved for any kind of attention, they frequented orgies where they had sex with many total strangers, ruined their reputations and self-images, and contracted life-threatening social diseases. Viewing this is like that slow motion feeling you get when you're in a car wreck--you know what's coming, but somehow you can't look away. This Frontline documentary should act as a real wake up call for parents who value their jobs more than their offspring.

What we as parents really don't (or want to) see.......

This video is a must see for any parent who is the slightest bit interested or concerned about the future of our children and ultimately our country. I am very worried about our country's future because of our children's apparent lack of moral fiber and extremely apathetic viewpoint. This program will (and should) be a wakeup call to all parents of preteen and teen children. I also highly recommend the Frontline video titled "Merchants of Cool." This shows exactly how our children are influenced by Corporate big business to be like they are soley for gain of the corporate all-mighty-dollar. A vicious cycle that needs to be broken. Definitely a video that parents and children need to watch and DISCUSS!

Sylplike Cocktail

Normally I wouldn't get too excited about a PBS Frontline Documentary. They slant far, far Left. Their axe is so sharp and so obvious, but TLCORC is comparatively mild. The evil Republican parents have created young teen porn imitators. Mommy and Daddy are too involved in money grubbing, their capitalist jobs, and materialism to raise their children. And what Children!

I'm an old man now. I remember youth rebellion and what not, but most of the sex and drugs happened in late teens or even early twenties. Here we have a swell Atlanta suburb knee deep in thirteen-year-old group sex, drunkenness, and wanna-be hip-hop thuginess. Mom is off on a corporate trip, so her twelve-year-old ends up at a motel room for alcohol and porn. She has many sexual partners and shares the boys with the other girls, so a syphilis epidemic breaks out. The kids are found out, but the parents, many divorced or in la la land, they can't blame it on themselves. These kids may be drunk all the time, but kids are good. I mean it!

So I asked some Philadelphia, PA area, older teens about sexual and drug practices when they were thirteen to fifteen and they said it wasn't happening and were surprised by my description of the Atlanta teens. I guess there's truth to rumors of earlier sexual contact in Southern States, young teen marriages and such, but The Lost Children seem to be a strange hybrid or Southern Sylphlike Cocktail.
