Fridays with my Aunt Susie

When I was 5 years old, and until I became a cheerleader in jr. high, I spent Friday nights with my Aunt Susie, who is only 7 years older than I. As a result, I heard Johnny Mathis' "Heavenly" album over and over, I danced to "Alley Oop" and "Rebel Walk," and I fell in love with Roy Orbison's music. Everybody knew about Elvis, but Roy Orbison was not as prevalent over the airwaves.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I sat out a storm on our friends' boat right outside Springfield, Missouri, wondering what we would do for the rest of the night. They whipped out "Black and White," and I was transported back to those long-ago Friday nights, dancing rock-and-roll with Susie. The night went over the top! We listened to Roy Orbison, Bruce Springsteen, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, and, as I pointed out, "That guy in the white jacket played with Elvis Presley." Tom Waits, Jennifer Warnes, an entire strings section wearing dark glasses: They were all there, playing fabulous music, and we were dancing in our seats.

We bought one for ourselves, one for our good friends who love music, and one for our young friend who displayed himself as a naturally talented guitarist when he was 9. Since our copy was delivered, we've listened to the music over and over, dancing in the kitchen, in the living room, and in our friends' living room, watching a 15-year-old pick up some classic guitar licks.

If you haven't heard the DVD, hear it. If you haven't bought it, buy it. Most of all, enjoy it. And thanks, Susie, for letting me spend those Fridays with you.

Outstanding review of Orbison's best songs with back-up by now well known artists. The musicians clearly are enjoying the rare evening and you feel that you are in on the jam session.

Great Video

Excellent music video. Would recommend it to anyone who likes music. Everyone in the video looked like they were having a lot of fun and Roy Orbison still sounded great.

Timeless

Have had this DVD for years, and I never tire of watching it. Roy Orbison, the monster range velvet voice, performs his hits accompanied by giants! Springsteen, Costello, Raitt, Waits and many others play and sing with the man wearing the large sunglasses. A veritable treat. Should be in anyone's music library who fancies quality sounds and a good time. Super!!!
