point it is a passport sized traveler's picture dictionary containing photographs of 1,200 items grouped in to categories such as food and drink, accommodations, transportation, automobiles, entertainment, nightlife and health. Its contents reflect the things that a traveler could need anywhere in the world, with images ranging from rickshaws and samosas through croissants and cheese to every type of toilet in use in the world today. The first edition was published in 1992. Now in its sixth edition, i t has sold 450,000 copies to date. point it was used by the Dutch Olympic tea m in Nagano, Japan, by patients with linguistic difficulties and is standard issue for Swiss UN surveyors.

Compact and useful

Point It was used in China when we dealt with a Chinese speaking acupuncturist. The diagrams of the human body's internal structure were helpful in explaining where "it hurts" far better than our hand signals.

China's different dialects and intonation can create a problem with pronunciation. If you have a food allergy, don't depend upon your Chinese guide to always be screening the foods for you (mine didn't). My pronunciation of the words for lobster and shrimp didn't work for most of our food servers but showing them the Point It pictures, in most cases, helped.

great!

We take it every time we travel outside of the US.
It is one of the best book for travel

Most helpful book ever

I love this postcard sized book. I can now communicate anywhere in the world with having to speak. I can order food carefree knowing there will not be snake or dog or worse in the mystery dish I just pointed to on the menu I can't read. I can find a western toliet anywhere I go. I can ask for the subway or the bus stop. A picture in this case is worth far more than 1000 words.

Very useful for overseas travel

Whether you'd like your room to have a double bed with a western-style toilet, you need a new camera battery or want to have a whiskey on the rocks, you can avoid any linguistic barriers by pointing at what you desire, from the over 1000 items in the photos. Highly recommended, tucks easily into a pocket.
