NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR STEPHEN HUNTER RETURNS WITH HIS MOST RIVETING BOB LEE SWAGGER VOLUME TO DATE.

Talk about a ride!

Woe unto he who crosses Bob Lee Swagger, especially when his daughter's life is at stake. Forced off the road and into a crash that leaves her in a coma, clinging to life, reporter Nikki Swagger had begun to peel back the onion of a Southernfried conspiracy bubbling with all the angst, resentment, and dysfunction that Dixie gangsters can muster. An ancient, violent crime clan, a possibly corrupt law enforcement structure, gunmen of all stripes and shapes, and deranged evangelicals rear their ugly heads and will live to rue the day they targeted the wrong man's daughter. It's what you call your big-time bad career move. All of it is set against the backdrop of excitement and insanity that only a weeklong NASCAR event can bring to the backwoods of a town as seemingly sleepy as Bristol, Tennessee.

A master at the top of his game, Hunter provides a host of thrilling new reasons to read as fast as we can. When Swagger picks up peeling where his daughter left off, and his swift sword of justice is let loose, we find a true American hero in his most stunning action to date. And -- in the form of Brother Richard, a self-decreed "Sinnerman" out of the old fire-and-brimstone tradition -- Hunter offers up his most diabolical, engaging villain yet. A triumph of story, character, and style, Night of Thunder is Stephen Hunter at his very best.

Another Must Read

"Night of Thunder" is probably Hunter's most movie-driven book. He must have seen what a mess was made of "Point of Impact" and so he decided to write a story so straightforward even Hollywood couldn't screw it up. I think it has too many stereotypes, like the Baptist minister whose secret is that he's really a gangster and his religious "school" is a disguise for a robbery gang seemed a little far fetched.

But I like the way he makes things come alive. I've never been to a NASCAR event, and now, thank goodness, I'll never have to go, because he makes that crazy scene so alive. At the end, there's some big gun that can shoot down a helicopter at a mile. Sure! Like they let civilians have those things! I don't think so. Still, when it shoots down not one but TWO helicopters, I could see those scenes as realistically as if they were in a movie. I also liked the way he used the meth plague as a backdrop. No one does much with this stuff, but it messes a lot of people up. I wish I could give it half-stars, because 4 1/2 feels just right, but I can't make myself give it a 4 because of the meth reality so I give it a reluctant five.

Stephen Hunter and Bob Lee Swagger Git 'er Done!

Hello, Everybody. I'm Bill and I am a Stephen Hunter addict. Actually, I'm an Earl Swagger/Bob Lee Swagger addict. Each time a new Swagger novel hits the bookstores, I snap up several copies. One for myself and others for fellow addicts. As always, I promise myself I'll read just one chapter a night: I don't HAVE to read them all at one sitting.
Usually in the early hours of the next morning, I finish the book, turn out the light and go to sleep wondering how long before Hunter finishes his next book.
I have to admit it: I LOVED "47th Samurai." I know there were folks that were incapable of suspending their disbelief for that one. Too bad for them. It was a dynamite book. At the same time, I was thrilled when "Night of Thunder" was released: It brings Bob the Nailer back to the homeland.
As always, Hunter doesn't disappoint. Bob Lee may have lost a step with his advancing years but he most certainly hasn't lost any of his sand. Somebody Back East takes after his daughter Nikki and Bob Lee leaves his Idaho home for the mountains of Tennessee/Virginia to check things out.
What he finds causes him to get his blood up, and there is all hell to pay!
Hunter sucks you into this story with a great driving sequence, and he gets the precision wheel work to a T. The unfolding story twists and turns and pulls you along. The bad guys are hateful, viperous scum. You WANT these creatures wiped up!
The gunfights, as always, get the heart pounding. They only could seem more vivid if you were part of an actual shootout. Hunter, as usual, gets it right.
If you know guns, you see here that Hunter REALLY knows guns. He gives us lots of guns, including a real Bob's Big Boy with a very special cartridge.
If you know NASCAR, you see that, here too, Hunter has done his research. He gets the cars, the drivers and their teams down pat. He gets the fans and the atmosphere of a NASCAR event just right.
The only problem is, when "Night of Thunder" ends you have to wait for Hunter's next Swagger novel before you can continue the ride. Or, if you don't want to wait, you could read this one again.
