Clive Staples Lewis was a prolific writer in many fields; some of his
most notable titles, such as The Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity and
The Problem of Pain discuss religion and his own passionate commitment after a period of uncertainty. He is perhaps best known among children for the books in his Chronicles of Narnia series.

Yet, during his time at the Kilns, the Oxford home he moved to in 1930 and he lived until his death in 1963, the magnitude of his contribution to literature was scarcely recognised. He and his older brother, Warnie, were simply known as the Professor and the Major, respectively.

My hope is that this guide will enable you to follow in the footsteps of the many pilgrims who have already completed the C. S. Lewis Tour at your own leisure, to enjoy it, live it and feel close to such a wonderful man.You can then bask in the memories forever! - Ronald K. Brind

A day with a man who loves Lewis

A few years ago, my husband and I had the great good fortune of being the sole customers of Ron Brind's C.S Lewis tour of Oxford. We spent a leisurely afternoon going from place to place that had significance in Lewis' life, from his favorite pub to his seat in Church and his greavesite (with a side trip to Tolkien's house). This wonderful little book has brought it all back. It is just like having Ron sitting next to you sharing his stories and memories. As a childhood playmate of Lewis' stepson Douglas Gresham, Ron has unique memories of the household at the Kilns. One of the things that makes Ron unique, and to me most special, is his affection for Lewis' wife Joy Davidman Gresham. Joy is often overlooked by Lewis' biographers, but she was an intensely creative woman in her own right and Lewis loved her very much. It warms my heart to have Ron refer to them as "Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Lewis" and suggest that a memorial to their love is appropriate! Also in this book, you will share Ron's passionate desire to have C.S. Lewis more fully appreciated in his home city, with his former home and the surrounding area made much more accessible to those who love him. To which I say keep up the good work! Thus for a unique and personal view of C.S. Lewis' Oxford, unobtainable from no one else, I highly recommend this book.

Very informative guide

The expertise and knowledge of the author, who (as is explained on the back cover) was a childhood friend of one of Lewis's stepsons, is evident throughout this highly informative guide. The book highlights all the key places in Oxford relavant to the life of C. S. Lewis, and is a companion guide to the Lewis-oriented tour of the area which Mr. Brind leads. Having taken this excellent, highly informative tour, I bought the book and found that it contained even more information than the tour itself. In addition to giving the locations (and driving directions to) the key Lewis-related points in the area, the book is filled with fascinating anecdotes concerning Lewis and his stepson Douglas Gresham from Mr. Brind's childhood. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, as well as the author's guided tour in Oxford, to anyone interested in Lewis.

Great Look into C.S. Lewis's Life in Oxford

I thoroughly enjoyed Ron Brind's book on C.S. Lewis and his life in Oxford. It made you feel like you were right there with him as you traveled through Oxford by way of his book. It's hard to beat a first person account, which Ron is able to offer since he knew the Lewis family as a child and was a friend of Lewis's stepson, Douglas Gresham.

The book goes into more detail than the movie about Lewis - "Shadowlands" - and corrects a few of the "creative liberties" taken by the makers of the movie. Still, the movie is a well-acted and excellent portrayal of Lewis and his relationship with Joy and Douglas Gresham, and is a must-see for C.S. Lewis fans, as well.

In summary, a very interesting and well-written book, and one I had trouble putting down as I traveled through England on my recent trip there, as I finished it before I landed back home in the states !

A Tribute to Professor C.S. Lewis

I visited Oxford a couple of months ago and I must say that I am glad I had bought this book. I wanted to see some of the most important places in the life of CS Lewis, but that is not an easy thing to do when you've never set foot in Oxford!
A Guide to the C. S. Lewis Tour in Oxford, is more than a guide, it is an experience, sometimes closer to a biography than to a map. I've learned a lot of things about Lewis thanks to it, and do not regret a single moment buying it. Do not hesitate, you'll find everything you want to see with this guide in your bag.
Moreover, it is easy to use, very accurate, and written with passion. What else do you need?
