"If students read only about and not in
criminology
, their experience is but secondhand, and their conclusions are determined by textbook authors," says Joseph Jacoby in the preface to this
edition
of his well-known collection,
Classics
of Criminology. By reading scholarly works in their original form, readers can share in the discovery and unfolding of powerful ideas in each author's own words. Classics of Criminology is a compilation of writings produced over the last 240 years. These writings represent the most influential approaches to describing and explaining crime and the social responses to crime. The organization of the collection enables readers to follow the development and application of key ideas from one major author to the next. The Third Edition offers sixty-five essential selections-seventeen of which are new to this edition and include such topics as environmental criminology, criminal careers, general strain theory, self-control theory, feminist theory, women's prison culture, and the effectiveness of correctional treatment. This expanded, balanced collection of scholarly works in their original form provides easy and affordable access to multiple perspectives.

The Necessary Compilation of Criminology Classics!
Editor Joseph Jacoby has compiled a collection of
criminology
and criminal justice related treatises representing the benchmarks as well as the most influential writings the discipline has to offer.
The text is broken down into three sections: The Classic Descriptions of Crime; Theories of Causation of Crime; and The Social Response to Crime.
The text also offers a chronological listing of the writings from the earliest to the most recent modern contributions to the science.
Authors include: Karl Marx and his "Class Conflict and Law;" William Westley's "Violence and The Police;" Michel Foucault's "Discipline and Punish;" and of course Wilson and Kelling's "Broken Windows: The Police and Neighborhood Safety."
As a Professor of Criminal Justice I recommend this text at the outset of any pursuit of undergraduate studies. Jacoby's text brings it all together so that the criminal justice student has access to a nearly complete offering of the relevant key ideas of criminology and is able to follow the development of the theories and practices culminating in the modern American system.
Unblushingly five stars for creating a useful text for the discipline.
