Jill Ker Conway's first children's book tells the story of
Felipe
, a young
flamingo
, who is left behind while his flock migrates to find more food. Scared and feeling lonely, Felipe finds comfort in a busybody Egret named Eleanor and a little girl visiting the marsh on her family's vacation. As Felipe awaits the return of his parents, other creatures also care for him until he's grown enough to join the flock and his family.
A great adventure!
New York Times best-selling author Jill Ker Conway has written a charming story that has several themes relevant to all children:
--The pain of teasing and name calling
--Body image (being different)
--Supporting and helpful friends
--Loving parents
The drawings by Lokken Millis are whimsical and wonderful, incorporating ocean birds and turtles in their natural surroundings.
Little ones would love this fun and funny story read to them. Middle readers will enjoy the new words they will learn, like: "raucous laugh"; "orange fritillaries" (butterflies); and her hair was plaited (braided) in a long pigtail."
In the end
Felipe
the
Flamingo
, who had a stiff and short neck and white feathers, has human and ocean friends who help him solve the problem, stretch his neck so he can eat, and feed him until he can eat the food that makes him pink--like all the other flamingos. Until then, he is teased and very unhappy.
Armchair Interviews says: Felipe had a great adventure that any child will enjoy being a part of as his parents, his friends and he work to help him become PINK.

My child has always had a thing for
flamingo
s. We purchased this book at our aquarium and gave it to her for her birthday. It is a wonderful book with the main theme: It takes a village to raise a child. I gave it four stars, because it just wasn't a "Wow, chill-bump book." We enjoyed it, but be sure set aside about 20-30 minutes to tell this story. It is worth the effort and the pictures are great...not to artsy, not to cute. It also teaches a child to ask for help and accept help from others (when in a safe environment and mom and dad aren't around). We found it enjoyable, have read it twice, and probably will read it many more times.
