In a world that knows too well the anguish inherent in the clash of old ways and new lifestyles, Margaret Craven_s classic and timeless story of a young man_s journey into the Pacific Northwest is as relevant today as ever. Here amid the grandeur of British Columbia stands the village of Kingcome, a place of salmon runs and ancient totems - a village so steeped in time that, according to Kwakiutl legend, it was founded by two brothers left on earth after the great flood. Yet in this Eden of such natural beauty and richness, the old culture of totems and potlaches is under attack - sl

y being replaced by a new culture of prefab houses and alcoholism. Into this world, where an entire generation of young people has become disenchanted and alienated from their heritage, Craven introduces Mark Brian, a young vicar sent to the small isolated parish by his church. This is Mark_s journey of discovery - a journey that will teach him about life, death, and the transforming power of love. It is a journey that will resonate in the mind of readers long after the book is done.

Real
Ms. Craven was in her sixties when she wrote this book!
Owl
is a book about 1 life and how many others 1 can touch. Understanding, compassion and dignity say it all. No matter how many times I read this novel, I never get the same thing from it.
a beautiful story
I'm adding this book to my short list of best books I have read, those that I want my children to read as they grow up. It left me crying, and happy.
One of the most amazing books I've ever read

I first read this book when I was fourteen, and it hit me deeper and harder than almost anything before or since. For such a slim little book it packs a hell of a punch, and left me thinking for a long, long time.
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest--my father was (and is) a ranger with the US Forest Service--so all the descriptions of the village and mountains and inlets are exceptionally vivid to me. Once or twice a year, usually when I go on a trip up to the North Cascades, I bring this book with me and read it again. It never gets tiring, no matter how many times you read it; it's so simple yet so affecting.
I won't bother summarising it, since a lot of other people have done so already, but there's one bit in there that made me cry like a baby the first time I read it, and still does to this day: "...for me it has always been easier here, where only the fundamentals count, to learn what every man must learn in this world."
"And what is that, my lord?"
"Enough of the meaning of life to be ready to die."
This book might not confer the literal experience given to Mark within the story, but it can at least give the reader an echo of everything he learned. It's a powerful story and I recommend it to everyone.

Magic for the heart & soul.
I just wanted to have fun. I love reading. Native American and Aboriginal People interest me. At reading the last page a flood of insightful messages about my stressful life washed over me. I have read for 54 years. I

A book of my youth
This book was required reading in high school (8th grade I believe) and recently the book was mentioned in a local newspaper article which prompted me to reread it 40+ years later.
It certainly is not a great book foran adult as it's simply written and the author does little to develop the characters. I think it's a wonderful book for a yong teenager to move forward from the books of their youth.
The book does drive home how we the "white man" did change the way of the native indian culture and the evils of alcohol are a factor.
Buy this book for your son/daughter or grandson/granddaughter but don't buy it for adult reading.
