She thought her heart was safe, but . . .

Reckless, wild, and beautiful, Lily Lawson delights in shocking proper London society -- and now she is determined to rescue her sister from an unwanted impending marriage to the notorious Alex, Lord Raiford, by fair means or foul. But while she succeeds outrageously, Alex is a master gamesman who is not to be undone.

Alex has lost one bride, yet he is enchanted by this remarkable lady who is willing to break any rule to flaunt her independence. When Lily offers him only scorn, he counters with kindness, and he parries her blistering barbs with gentle words and a soft, tender touch. The spirited miss will pay dearly for her interference -- with her body, her soul, and her stubborn, unyielding heart. But will Alex's own heart be the prize to be won in this sensuous game of love?

One of the best

I absolutely love this book. I read it when it was first issued and have re-read it many times over the years.

I have never encountered and heroine like Lily or a hero quite like Alex. The humanity of the great romantic pairing is unmatched by any other romance novel I have read. I like the sillines, the darkness, the desperation and the angst. It all works and works well.

Great read!!

This is the second book by Lisa Kleypas that I have read and love this one too! I love finding new authors that really capture my heart. This book get a little crazy in the middle, but overall I loved it!! This one is definately a keeper!!

Good read...

I really enjoy Lisa Kleypas books. She gets the chemistry right and her characters are all strong. I like "It Happened One Autumn" and "Mine Till Midnight" also. I also like Liz Carlyle - her writing is similar.

Great book, great author!

This was the first book I read by this author and i have to say, i really liked the book! there was a lot of passion and chemistry in her characters... having read this book i became interested to find out more about one of the characters, Derek Craven, who luckily has his own book! i just started reading that one(Dreaming of you) which is somewhat of a sequel to this and so far so good! i love that her books don't take forever to start or forever to get exciting! from the first page you're hooked!

An unconventional historical romance

Lily Lawson is a rebel: a gambler, a hunter, an unrepentant flirt. Lily is nothing like what the dictates of polite society say a woman should be. And she wouldn't have it any other way. But despite her unconventional demeanor, Lily would do anything to protect her family. When she learns that her younger sister Penelope is engaged to Alex, Lord Raiford, a man reputed to be sullen and incapable of love, Lily decides to intervene. She considers herself outside the bounds of romantic love, so she vows that her sister will have what she cannot. She goes after Lord Raiford with everything she's got. And with Lily, that means no holds are barred.

Lord Raiford is a sensible and fair man. He doesn't charge his tenants exorbitant rents, he gambles intelligently, and he will marry for the sake of heirs, not for love. Alex was in love once and when he lost his ex-fiance after she fell off her horse hunting, he vowed that he wouldn't fall in love again love someone so impetuous and volatile. So he picks Penelope Lawson: a quiet, studious woman who will be a good mother to his heirs and who doesn't have it in her to cause trouble. Unfortunately for him, Penelope is Lily's sister, and Lily won't give her up without a fight.

Then Came You made me laugh out loud and made my heart ache a little bit, so it was the best of both worlds. Lily Lawson is a fantastic historical romance heroine because she doesn't fit the conventions that one would expect. She's not prim and proper, and could never be considered a lady. Lily spends her nights in gaming halls, makes bawdy jokes with men, and is a fantastic horsewoman. She isn't afraid of confrontation and she's willing to put Alex in his place when necessary. And Alex is a traditional historical hero, in all the best ways. He's a conventional man who values his home, family name, and place in the House of Lords, but he'd put it all aside for true love. What he has with Lily is worth putting his reputation on the line, and he does so without reserve. This story was a great introduction to anyone who hasn't read a Kleypas historical before, and even seasoned fans will appreciate this unconventional love story.
