Half good
From the back cover:
Two
single
dad
s (and their double dose of daughters) seek the perfect wives (and moms!) in this delightful duo:
SWEETBRIAR SUMMIT by Christine Rimmer
The single dad: Patrick Jones, loving father with a less-than-angelic reputation
His choice: Regina Black, lace to Patrick's leather, angel to his hellion
But would this notorious groom's blushing bride embrace motherhood with the same fervor with which she embraced Patrick?
HEAT WAVE by Jennifer Greene
The single dad: Workaholic Mick Larson, currently coping with two growing daughters
His choice: Kat Bryant, fill-in mom to Mick's two kids
A tete-a-tete about the girls led to a torrid kiss...then Kat's full-scale withdrawal! But for Mick, one taste of this suddenly secretive lady would never suffice...
And my review:
This collection contains two previously published full-length romances, not the shorter novella length that you normally find in anthologies.
SWEETBRIAR SUMMIT is the kind of story that gives romances a bad name. The heroine sees the hero without his shirt and *gasp*, she's utterly scandalized. The heroine was practically having a fit of the vapors every time she saw the hero. What, did she grow up in a convent, or something? Considering that this is a contemporary romance, it just struck me as odd. The heroine came across as naive and overly sheltered, rather than refreshingly innocent. Okay, so she finds the hero stunningly attractive. But don't overdo it! She shouldn't practically start to hyperventilate just from seeing him moving furniture (I'm not kidding). The reader won't find it at all believeable, or enjoyable. Two stars.
HEAT WAVE was a much better story. The writing style was smooth, flowing and easy to read without the annoying head-hopping so many authors use. I really liked the characters in this story. Both the hero and heroine were strong people, yet caring ones that were considerate of each other. I liked that these two had real relationship problems keeping them apart, not some stupid "big misunderstanding". Also, they actually tried to work on their problems like rational adults rather than ignoring their troubles or bickering like petty children. That's very refreshing and extremely rare in category romance. While the characters of Mick's daughters weren't as developed as I might have liked, the characters of Mick and Kat were very well done. I really felt like I knew them by the end of the story. And the author handled what could have been a cliched plot device with delicacy and skill. I would certainly be interested in trying more books by this author, as her writing is quite enjoyable. Four stars.
Since HEAT WAVE was also published on its own, I would recommend just trying to get a copy of it by itself, rather than buying this collection. Still, if you happen to come across this book at a thrift store or garage sale, go ahead and buy it, as HEAT WAVE is worth a read. Just don't shell out a lot for a book that is only half good.
