The life story of John Luther Jones, an American railroad engineer whose death was celebrated in the ballad Casey Jones, which made him a folk hero.

A great book for the "young engineer"..........

I got this book for my 7 year old son and he loves it. We love the mix of Tall Tales elements with historical fact, and the illustrations are great. The end of the story does tell of Casey's final run and his tragic accident, so it may be upsetting to very young or sensitive children. However, it is told in the light of his saving the lives of the passengers on board the train, and my son already knew the story of Casey Jones, so the ending was no suprise.

All in all, a must have for you young engineers library.

"Hello this book is very serious but the illustrator made Sim Webb look very dumb and Casey Jones
look so nice and it looks like Casey Jones has to take care of Sim Webb like he is a baby boy." (from the kids)

As a first grade teacher who cares about the kinds of stereotypes I expose my students to, I have decided to return this book. The image of Sim Webb portrayed is very sambo-like, and I have decided to return this book. As an alternate, I have found a beautifully written and illustrated story by Nancy Farmer, illustrated by James Bernardin. It's called Casey Jones's Fireman, the Story of Sim Webb. Both Casey Jones and Sim Webb are portrayed as respectable, hard-working men.Casey Jones's Fireman: The Story of Sim Webb
