Fleet of Worlds marks Larry Niven's first full novel-length collaboration within his Known Space universe, the playground he created for his bestselling Ringworld series. Teaming up with fellow SF writer Edward M. Lerner, Fleet of Worlds takes a closer look at the Human-Puppeteer (Citizens) relations and the events leading up to Niven's first Ringworld novel. Kirsten Quinn-Kovacs is among the best and brightest of her people. She gratefully serves the gentle race that rescued her ancestors from a dying starship, gave them a world, and nurtures them still. If only the Citizens knew where Kirsten?s people came from?.
A chain reaction of supernovae at the galaxy?s core has unleashed a wave of lethal radiation that will sterilize the galaxy. The Citizens flee, taking their planets, the Fleet of Worlds, with them.
Someone must scout ahead, and Kirsten and her crew eagerly volunteer. Under the guiding eye of Nessus, their Citizen mentor, they explore for any possible dangers in the Fleet?s path?and uncover long-hidden truths that will shake the foundations of worlds.

Wow! Best new known space book in a long time

I have been living with Man-Kzin Wars stuff and extra Ringworld books that don't go anywhere really new.
This was not a high priority buy with me because of the extra name on the cover, but after reading it I still have no Idea who Edward M. Lerner is as this reads like the best of the old Niven stuff most of which was shorter than the Ringworld books and a lot of which was shorter than this.
Known Space has expanded again - enjoy it and hope for more.

Interesting History Lesson of Known Space

Fleet of Worlds, set during the time of Beowulf Shaeffer, travels across the universe and gives the reader a look into the traveling worlds and culture of the puppeteers, as well as an interesting tie-in to previous Niven story lines and characters.
I recommend this book mainly on how the authors illustrate how puppeteers' name is not just based on their looks, but also their actions working behind the scenes in the affairs of the universe to protect their own interests and safety.

Perfectly agreeable visit to Known Space

An adequately engaging return to Larry Niven's "Known Space" universe, the setting of Mr. Niven's classic books, "Ringworld", "The Ringworld Engineers", "Tales of Known Space", and other great works by the author. While not anywhere near as good as the previously mentioned works of the 1960's/1970's and slightly beyond, "Fleet of Worlds"- which is set well before the events of "Ringworld"- is a lot better than another recent Niven work, "The Ringworld Throne", which I found meandering and dull, not to mention hard to follow. Maybe co-author Edward M. Lerner helped Mr. Niven to re-discover the hard science, sense of wonder, and thoughtful-yet-playful social commentary that characterized his best works. Or maybe narrator Tom Weiner, who read the unabridged audiobook version of the novel in a dramatic yet clean and no-nonsense fashion, helped to bring it all home for me. In any event, if you're a fan of Larry Niven, I think you'll get some modest enjoyment out of this tale even if you eye-read it the old-fashioned way. Again, not great but not bad.
