Into the next generation of lego's
My son has been in
lego
Robotics for 3 years now. Last year they won 2nd place overall in the state competetion. Next year we are onto Lego Mindstorm
NXT
. Once we started building creations, programming, and watching the Lego work, we were both amazed. He is looking so forward to next year. Having his own will be a great advantage with the experience. This is a must buy...it is a great Mind project for childrem.
Mindstorm NXT
I bought this for my 14 yr old son. He had the
Mindstorms
RCX and wanted to expand to the
NXT
because of all the sensors. I have always felt that
LEGO
s are great toys. They encourage creativity and with the Mindstorms they help teach about robotics.

Great For The Right Kid/Parent
If your child has an interest in robotics, this is the right way to get started. There are numerous kits for building individual models but combining
Lego
s (something all kids are familiar with), and sensors/motors/software makes this a real winner. This has really sparked my eight year old son's imagination. The kit is intuitive but just advanced enough that you can plan on working closely with your child - sort of a dying practice in our culture. It will take some learning on your part in order to keep this interesting and reinforcing. Plan on developing a healthy respect for people that design complex robotic systems.

NXT - Great but why such a small memory?
I won't repeat what everyone has said about the functionality about this toy but what I AM happy to repeat is the fact that the memory is WAY too small. Just as you start to get enthusiastic about this product you hit the dreaded memory full problem. This is really disappointing because a) it limits children's ability to explore the world of robotics and b) because memory is SO CHEAP that to give the customer less than you get in some musical greetings cards is rediculous. If
Lego
thought it might add to the cost then why-oh-why didn't they simply put a memory expansion slot on the
NXT
brick? Then we could put some serious memory in it. It's also naive to think that this is just a toy. Lots of educational establishments (including universities) are buying this thing because it has such potential. Come on Lego - give us a memory expansion option!!!

Great Learning Experience
I bought this to use with my 9 year old grandsons. We are having a great time. I was amazed how quickly they started programming--within the first hour. Immediate feedback on their programs really keeps their attention. I did purchase a separate book on programming which was helpful.
