a must have

the food grinder is the attachment for my stand mixer that i use the most. a must have for anyone with a kitchenaid stand mixer.

Amazingly easy and powerful!

I used to use a hand grinder to grind our own hamburger but it was hard, slow, and very inefficient. Grinding a couple of pounds of burger could take an hour or more. When I got my Kitchenaid mixer the first thing I did was buy the grinder, slicer, and pasta maker attachment kit. When everything arrived I purchased 1 1/2lbs of chuck steak, got out the book to read how to put the grinder on the mixer, turned around and saw that my husband already had it on and ready to go, it's that easy! I sliced the meat into 1" x 5" strips and started dropping them in. It was amazing watching the hamburger come pouring out. (They recommend double grinding meat to give it the right texture and I agree with this.) Less than 20 minutes later I was cooking fresh ground, LEAN hamburger for dinner. Cleanup was equally as easy, unscrew the chuck holding it to the mixer and take the whole thing to the sink. Then just unscrew the cap, pull out the plate, blade, and "worm", and wash with warm soapy water or throw it in the dishwasher. I used it the next night for chicken and it was just as easy and delicious too! My only complaint is that the food pusher isn't quite large enough for the hole so if you double grind the meat like they recommend it may push some back up around the pusher but it's a mild annoyance.

Fantastic! Easy to use and clean. Love being able to grind my own fresh ground beef or a combo of meats for meat loaf! This really adds to the use of my KitchenAid Stand Mixer.

I didn't like the fact that the attachment is made from plastic (looks cheap compared to the kitchen aid mixer base) and also if you need something powerful this is not for you. The recommended speed is 4 which is pretty slow.

I know everybody loves this grinder...but

I've read the many positive reviews for this grinder and agree with most of the comments. However, if you want to grind gristle, bone, cartiledge and other tough meat (such as for pet food), this is not the grinder for you. It works well for hamburger, sausage, etc but it takes time compared to a heavy duty grinder (1/2 hp and above) which can grind pounds and pounds of meat in minutes. The narrow throat on this grinder requires you to cut meat into 1" chunks; a heavy duty grinder can take fist size pieces and grind them without effort. If you want a home attachment and can live with precutting, slow speed and occasional jams, this can work for you. If you have a lot of meat to grind (hunters, sausage lovers, etc), I might suggest a commercial grinder which costs about as much as the KitchenAid mixer. I love making sausages and went to a heavy duty grinder (get one with metal gears and not the cheap plastic gears) and I think you'll be happier in the long run. I realize I am one of the few reviewers with negative comments about this grinder attachment but serious meat grinders and sausage makers would probably agree with me. For occasional grinders, this attachment will work; for serious grinders, go heavier duty.
