Greatest Memory Card? Ever!

This little puppy is a great feature that only the Sega Dreamcast system has. The VMU, or Visual Memory Unit, is like a memory card times 10 million. It has an 8-bit processor, (Like the old Sega Master System or Regular Nintendo) it's own small 1"x1" LCD screen, 200 blocks of memory, and it's own mini-style controller. Anyone who plays games on Dreamcast will need one of these. Almost every game you will play on Dreamcast you will need to save your game position, info, or stats. Using it is simple, plug it into one of the 2 Dreamcast controller ports, then boot up your favorite game and start saving! But that's not all! You can not only save games, but you can also PLAY GAMES on the VMU, and link your VMU with other VMU to play 2-player style games! There is a huge variety of games you can play on it but I think one of the most useful ones is the RPG mini-games. You can save your RPG characters info to the VMU, and then build up its skill on the actual VMU itself, this way, when you play the game again, it will be stronger and better depending on how much you built it up. You can also use the VMU while playing a game, it will often reveal secrects and allow you to do other goodies that are only accessable with the VMU. The only real flaw is that it doesn't have enough space, so you might have to buy 2.... If your a REAL Dreamcast gamer, you need atleast one of these, if not more.

Batteries run out awfully quick

Maybe I just got a bad unit, but my batteries ran out after only a few hours of use. The memory unit runs on two type CR2032 batteries. Now, the problem with this is that these batteries are so expensive that replacing them costs about 3/8 the price of the VMU. Kinda expensive if you ask me. It is still a great idea however, and I recommend picking at least one up. I have a few games for Dreamcast and they would have been somewhat less enjoyable without the unit. I just hope your batteries last longer than mine did.

Might be good, but why should it be needed?

This device might be needed, but why doesn't Dreamcast have that built into the console itself? Hmmm... I wonder. ;-)

People who wish to buy Dreamcast in the future need to know about this extra necessity (at extra cost): what I would call a gimick. It's a sleezy thing to do, really, in my opinion, not providing game saves within the console itself when it is a basic function needed by many games. You think you have everything you need when you buy Dreamcast, but oh, no.
