Tempted For More!

Every heroine in a fantasy novel has their own super powers...except Lily Yu. She can only claim to be a sensitive, immune to magical meddling & only able to feel the powers of others. In a world where she ends up the predestined mate of the werewolf prince...well she's kind of plain.

Lily is a cop, a detective. And that is how she ends up meeting her playboy prince in wolf's clothing. He's a murder suspect in her grizzly investigation. But Lily starts to think someone's setting Prince Rule up.And even if she has to battle her fellow offficers she's going to get to the bottom of things.

With sorcerers, gnomes, were creatures of various descriptions, witches, an avenging evil goddess bent on destruction of our plane of existance...well you get the point, this book makes for a fun time!

Dangerous Fun

This is the first book I have read by Eileen Wilks. Now I am eagerly anticipating the sequel to be pulished on Nov. 1st - "Mortal Danger". "Tempting Danger" was interesting, and a fun story, with enough twists to keep it from being just another shapeshifter story. Lily Yu, the heroine, is tough, and smart, and Chinese, so her family is fun to hear about. Rule Turner, the hero, is sexy and werewolf royalty, so this is a satisfying pair. Ms Wilks writes well, keeping you drawn into the story. I look forward to more books about Lily and Rule and their fascinating families. If you enjoyed Rebecca York's werewolf series, you will really like this one, too.

I liked this book

If you are familiar with Christine Feehan's soulmates or Katie Macalister's Beloveds, you'll find this book's concept familiar. However, instead of vampire's mate, this heroine finds herself to be a werewolf's Chosen.

Mostly, this book tracks Laurell Hamilton's series: the modern-day world openly acknowledges the supernatural. The supernatural creatures' rights were given through a Supreme Court case. In this case, the petite dark-haired heroine is a homicide detective instead of a private detective; however, like Anita Blake, Lily Yu - originally working only with the local lawkeepers - quickly finds herself recruited by the federal government. Lily also has a special magical ability that gives her a certain amount of immunity when dealing with magic-wielding foes.

The heroine must solve preternatural serial murders that implicate a church wherein the congregants worship a demon. In doing so, she faces gender discrimination and combats the mind control imposed on fellow officers by the church's leaders. In the end, Lily solves the crime, killing at least one of the bad guys. Another bad guy gets away with a powerful magical weapon, setting up the villian for the next book. It was interesting to see this author's spin on the familiar plotline.

"Tempting Danger" is Tempting Me to Read More

I was surprised once I got into this book that it was categorized as a romance. Don't get me wrong, there was some attraction between the two main characters, but it didn't have much to do with romance. There are a few other series out there right now that are similar to this one. You've got your Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton and then there's the incredibly addictive Sookie Stackhouse (a.k.a. the Southern Vampire series) by Charlaine Harris. Not to mention the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison (Dead Witch Walking, etc.). There's been a massive output of these kick-butt supernaturally talented women, so what will set "Tempting Danger" apart from them?

Lily Yu is a detective with the San Diego police department. Being a woman, a young one at that, she's had a tough time proving herself to be up to the job. When a man is found dead, supposedly of werewolf teeth and claws, she's surprised to be given the lead on the case. Her secret weapon is the key to that though, her special "sensitive" skills that only she, her family and her captain know about. She can sense magic and any traces it might leave behind in cases like this. The case leads her to Rule Turner, the playboy prince of clan Nokolai, who is the major suspect. Lily and Rule are instantly drawn to one another, though neither understands the nature of the attraction at first. Lily is determined to keep Rule at a professional distance, while he comes to realize who she is to him: his Chosen, the mate the Lady, his goddess, has picked for him. Lily is helpless to deny the attraction and so their relationship begins. The attraction is based soley on this irresistible bond between them and very little to do with romance. Neither seems to care deeply for the other, and it's just too easy for them to fall into bed together. Their relationship is disappointing to say the least. One can only hope it will improve in the next book. Treachery, deceit and murder mark this first book in the series as Lily and Rule team up to find out who is behind the setup to blame werewolves for the killings.

The book certainly does not lack a variety of interesting characters to carry the reader through. Lily, obviously, is of Chinese decent, so there's a great chance for the author to insert some of the rich heritage of the Chinese culture. She's also managed to differentiate her werewolves enough from other similar series, kind of creating a mysteriously closed mafia world for them. Rule is an okay hero, but so far nothing to stand up and take attention of. Hopefully he'll shine through more in future books. The only other part that disappointed me was the parallel world in which the story took place. It was kind of boring. There was a Purge about four hundred years prior, so magic is not present like it was back then. Apparently a person of Lily's limited sensitive talents is not the norm anymore. It kind of struck me as an earth where the residents know that demons, faeries, etc. exist, but are desperately trying to turn a blind eye. That blind eye will get them into trouble by the end of the book. I was expecting a world somewhere along the lines of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series, which is very exciting and edgy. I wish the world of "Tempting Danger" had been taken just a little further. There are other far better books like this one out there already, but here's to hoping the series will really go places. Other than that, I look forward to seeing this series develop into a full-blown good one that readers will anticipate reading months prior to the release dates.

Too many echoes?

I loved the novella from which this novel developed. But I have mixed feelings about this. Like others have pointed out, there are several similarities to other series. But the most striking one for me was the resemblance to Nora Roberts's In Death series. We get a Lily Yu who feels a lot like Eve Dallas, Rule has similarities to Roarke's personalty, he pursues Lily rather than the other way, just like Roarke, and to cap it all, Lily has had a traumatic sexual abuse experience as a child that results in nightmares. The sequel even opens with Rule's annoyance with the fact that Lily refuses to move in with him despite the nightmares (again, Roarke and Eve's dynamic.)
I'm hoping Ms.Wilkes's series establishes its own ground soon.
