A wild new Direction for DEXTER....I Hope the TV series takes some cues from this one

If you are a fan of the Showtime series or the original novels, you will enjoy the latest adventure of the "Dark Avenger" a.k.a DEXTER, the blood-splatter specialist/serial killer-who-only-kills-serial-killers.

Without revealing too much, DEXTER loses touch with his animalistic-dark side "passenger" right when he needs it the most, dealing with a possible cult of serial killers.
After accidentally proposing to his girl friend, Dexter approaches his wedding as the events of a strange murder case unfold around him. Meanwhile, in a sub-plot that I pray will make it to season 3 of the TV series, Dexter begins his tutelage of "how-not-get-caught" with his future step-children/ apprentices. In addition to all of this an approaching hurricane, heaps some grief onto poor old Dexter.

Lindsay's cast of characters is great and intriguing, like Dex's foul-mouth sis and what's left of her ex-FED boyfriend. As a southerner, I loved his accurate depiction of pre-storm prep and other touches that cement the author as a true Florida local.

This one may be "too surreal" for new fans just coming from watching the Showtime series. But, I for one cannot wait for the 4th book to turn-up.

Despite the superfluous supernatural element, still a great read

While I enjoyed the 3rd book in this excellent series a lot, it wasn't nearly as good as the first two books in the series mainly due to the entirely superfluous appearance of the supernatural IT as a force of evil behind Dexter's trials. However, the writing is every bit as compelling and the characters every bit as believable (aside from the rather vaguely defined and ultimately nonsensical IT) as in the other two books in the series. A far better approach to the story (which other than the central supernatural element, was as good as the previous ones) would have been to make it about the cult of Moloch and maybe have Dexter hallucinate some of the supernatural [...] as part of some subtle psycho-active drug combined with subliminal suggestions from visiting a cult website while under the influence of the drug. One of the attractive things about the previous Dexter books (and the TV series) was Dexter's hyper-rationality. This has been greatly compromised by the intrusive "voice-overs" from the nefarious IT incongruously injected into an otherwise excellent crime novel. The end of the book opens the door a crack to this approach. Hopefully the next book in the series will go through that door and restore Dexter as a rational being (with a kinda weird hobby) :) Bottom line: Even when Jeff's bad he's still better than 99% of the best sellers out there and I'm still looking forward to more books in this excellent series.

Dexter wouldn't do this.

Right over the wall. Why did he do this? Good thing it's all back to normal by the end. May be book 4 will be more "Dexterish".
