L-word
I really enjoyed this set of videos and will continue to collect each
season
, as long as shotime will put them on the air, but i really do wish they would put bette and tina back together.
Great value on series
We think it's a good value when you consider the cost of a cable pay station for the year versus the price of the DVD's that we can watch at our leisure. The DVD's work just fine and are of excellent quality. We buy the collection every
season
.

Great show but nothing can beat season 3.
I've watched all four
season
s of The L
Word
. I've loved the show from the very beginning. The L Word helped me with my own issues and made me feel as though I'm not alone and what I have to deal with isn't all that horrible. Season after season I've watched as the storylines developed, characters came and went, and new issues were brought up. If you've read my other reviews, you might note that I've rated every season 5 stars, except for this one. Here's why...
One huge part of the show that people seem to enjoy is the sex scenes. Let's face it-sex sells. Although every season has quite a few sex scenes here and there, with this season I actually started to notice how meaningless and thrown in some scenes were. I'd be lying if I said that an entire season without intimate scenes between the women would be ok with me but I was almost disgusted with this season.
And tying into the sex scene thing is the weird hookups. Yes, I understand that the show is trying to teach that love can come in all shapes and sizes but a couple of the hookups were borderline uncomfortable. Clearly the girls weren't into each other and it seemed rather forced.
Speaking of weird and uncomfortable, there was a lot of "sketchy" scenes in this season that made me want to fast forward through them. Characters that were once cool in my book were irritating and unlikeable. Let's discuss this season's characters:
Shane-She obviously is no longer with Carmen. This season opens with her being a
complete
mess. And she continues being a mess throughout the whole season. I didn't have a problem with Shane before this season (although I'll admit I don't see the appeal she has to a lot of lesbian women) but I had absolutely no sympathy for her. Shane meets a new girl named Paige who has a son. And, oh yeah, Shane gets a huge surprise when she learns that she must care for her brother, Shay, when he's literally dropped off on her porch.
Jenny-I don't know what it is about her but she's just plain annoying. I think she's absolutely smart and beautiful but she's one of those girls that you just want to tell her to SHUT. UP. In this season, Jenny writes a book called "Lez Girls" and hunts for directors to turn her book into a movie. The book is based on her friends who are quite upset with her for writing negative things about them (there's even one noteworthy and hilarious scene that involves Alice going at it with Jenny). And while she attempts to get more publicity for her book, she does quite a few crazy things.
Alice-Ah, Alice. How I love thee. Who DOESN'T love Alice? As with every season, she's the most real and sincere character on the show. Not to mention unintentionally funny. Alice meets a girl named Papi, a Hispanic version of Shane (meaning she sleeps with a lot of chicks). Papi then introduces Alice to Tasha who then form a relationship together. Tasha is in the military and she and Alice have differing opinions on the war.
Bette-Nothing makes me more angry than not seeing Bette and Tina together. Bette meets a woman named Jodi. Jodi's deaf and the two of them literally and figuratively have communication problems. At the end of the season, Jodi and Bette's relationship changes as well as Tina and Bette's relationship. I'm hoping for better things between the latter in the next season.
Tina-Tina's still with Henry. Bleh. It's really weird but sometimes Tina has a "Who cares if I'm in a relationship with a man?" attitude and other times she's in a "I wish I could go back to liking women" attitude. Towards the end of the season she meets another woman and she indirectly lets Bette know that she still has feelings for her.
Kit/Angus-What a cute couple. How can you not like Angus? He's cute, understanding, thoughtful, and a cheater. Yeah, he ends up cheating on Kit with Anjelica's nanny. The couple go through quite a few things together and Kit ultimately learns that she's not a lesbian. Duh.
Helena-My second favorite character. Helena is broke this season after her mother stopped giving her money. She must learn to be frugal and to stop buying lavish things that she really doesn't need. That is, until she meets a poker player who sort of takes her in (or uses her, both are true).
Phyllis-Weird, just weird. She starts a relationship with Alice. Enough said. I don't understand her character and must fast forward through the scenes she's in.
Max-Max continues his transition from woman to man. He deals with his issues involving his body and hatred from his coworkers. This is another character that I don't understand. It's almost as though the writers are forcing Max to be over the top manly. And I hate to say it but I think Daniela Sea is an awful actress.
Don't get me wrong. There were quite a few scenes that were typical L Word funny and it wasn't horrible to watch. However, comparing it to season 3, this season was uncomfortable, short, and not really noteworthy. If you're a fan of the series, you'll probably enjoy this season but I'm hoping this season was sort of a setup for next season. We'll see.
