Really funny movie.

The first time I saw this movie, I laughed so hard, I cried. It's now one of my favorites (which is why I bought it.)

When it rains, it pours

Misfortune plagues the Hoover Family during their road trip to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. Every member of this dysfunctional family has something bad happen to them, although the grandfather has probably earned the bragging rights. Despite the Hoover's bad luck and hardships, Little Miss Sunshine is a feel good movie that shows that family unity can overcome even the worst calamities.

Little Miss Sunshine is a comedy, but this may not be apparent in the first fifteen minutes. If you like your comedy raw, this might not be the best choice for you. The humor ranges from dark to slapstick, but the deadpan realism keeps the comedic aspects so subtle they might be missed on first viewing--which makes this the kind of film where you pick up something new each time you watch it.

It's interesting that it's been twenty-five years since National Lampoon's Vacation (20th Anniversary Special Edition). There are lots of similarities. Trade the Family Truckster for a beaten up old VW Mini-Bus, put a serendipity dad in charge of an extended family instead of just a nuclear family, throw the deceased relative in the back instead of on the roof, and then set the daughter instead of the father on a quest. These parallels only skim the surface. You could almost call this a remake of Vacation using a more modern concept of the family. Both are fun movies and even more fun to watch back-to-back.
