a gentler time, a magical kingdom

I must admit that I go both ways on the disney thing. As a parent I love and abhor the company.(better read this review fast, because I am going to put it in my vault and it won't come out for ten years) And I know that Disney fans can be both gushy and stubborn. Mention the Disney name and you will never get a flatline...there is always a reaction. But for my two cents, this is a valentine to a gentler era. The coup do grace for me is the opening of disneyland show. This is a pop cultural cult classic. Perhaps it really is designed for all the viewers who are around forty or so. Art Linkletter adlibbing away, old fashioned Mickey Mouse Costumes, Ronald Reagan reading off papers, Frank Sinatra and son riding autopia followed by Sammy Davis jr.. Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen riding down the hill and doing a live song. Again, I would suggest the world is far too picky. There's a static line? The box says unedited? Go to your disney conventions with your pins and your videos, and take a breath. Take this all for what it is. This is a time capsule back to a world that no longer exists. No longer would a major star go to an opening day with normal people./ Sigfried and Roy at opening day of California Adventure? The cast of Friends sing live at Disney World? This is the kind sweet, unabashed nostalgia that makes my heart beat in a easy listening sort of way. ................I also love the episode where Walt gives Miss Disney( or whatever her name is) a tour of all the stuff that is going on in the tenth year of Disneyland. It is sexist(as Walt shows the young girl all the man's work) but amazingly fun. Walt was an ultimate showman..and for all his trappings, the guy comes off really well...........All throughout the work there are fantastic things. Yes, it can meander(this is why you have a fast forward control)...but anyone who wants to do a little research on this period, or pop culture in general should have a look at this.

PERFECT if you grew up with The Wonderfull World of Color

For those of us growing up on the East coast in the 1950's and 60's, our only way to glimpse that marvelous place called Disneyland, was when Walt would feature the park on the Sunday evening show. All my friends and I would be glued to the TV as we'd see this magical place called Disneyland that seemed so far away and we all hoped we could visit some day.
This disk set is a wonderful nostalgic time machine to a simpler time of television when I guess it was blatent self promotion, but all of us loved just the same, 'cause who didn't want to see what new rides were being developed at Disneyland?
In the 10th anniversary show, Walt offers us peeks into a couple of new rides that were being constructed at the time: Pirates of the Carribean, and the Haunted Mansion!
Who knew what timeless attractions were being developed back then?
I just loved the disks, and would love to see more; I know there was a show dedicated to the opening of Pirates.
Leonard Maltin's introductions appear a bit stilted, but his enthusiasm is sincere, and presents a nice intro to each of the shows.

Disneyland USA

4 shows on a set:

The Disneyland Story, Dateline Disneyland, Disneyland After Dark, Disneyland Tenth Anniversary.

Disney enthusiast must see this one!

If you love Disney or Disneyland then you need to get this DVD collection. You can go to the grand opening of Disneyland or even the 10th anniversary. It really is a must see.

Tampering with History

I was real happy to see some of the "classic" Wonderful World of Disney finally get to DVD--but somewhat less so when I realized that the good folks at Disney had decided to do some judicious editing/censoring of the shows. In "Disneyland After Dark", do we REALLY need to have a bold new "warning" on the screen that the Polynesian fire walkers and flame twirlers are "professional" and "not to try this at home"? You can see this same show on the Disney Channel without this distracting "subtitles". Also, in "Dateline: Disneyland", the entire sequence with the Mousketeers is missing--something I almost missed until I re-viewed a tape I had made from the Disney Channel of the same program! I have heard there is some problem with clearance to sell their likenesses. If Disney is going to wholeheartedly go into the DVD home video market, let it be with their ORIGINAL programs (of which they have so many wonderful shows). The presentation of "special collections" of restored programming is just a bit misleading for the consumer.
