Standout performances by all

This is a movie where everybody's performance is strong. Especially strong is Locke's first performance. She lights up the screen everytime you see her. Anyone who's ever felt a little different from everyone else will recognize the feelings in this movie. Arkin plays a deaf mute convincingly and quietly. Tyson has a fire about her. Rodriguez plays his part with dignity. Even the members of Locke's family are convincing as people who's luck suddenly changed. For two performers who were making a debut, Keach and Locke did a good job.

A movie that you will remember for a LONG time.

Without giving too much away, I just want to say that this is a great moving for anyone out there who appreciates Literature. This is the kind of movie they show you in high school English class. It is an excellent example of Literature brought to the big screen. As a movie, it's a bit more accessible than as a book. If you saw this movie as a kid, you may have found it boring, and a bit slow, because it's a story about some very real characters, without a lot of action. But it's extremely well acted, by a very talented cast. There are a few other movies that are in the same genre as this one - stories with genuine characters and very good actors.

Some others: "Journey to Bountiful" with Geraldine Page, "Fried Green Tomatoes" "Walkabout" (not American) etc. These are not quite Art Films, but they are not quite mainstream Hollywood either. They are movies with substance. This is one of the best.

A poignant story of unselfish giving

HEART is an extremely touching film that can really rip out your heart. Arkin portrays a man full of kindness and love who does nothing but give to others and, in so doing, tremendously influences their lives. He gives much but does not receive back from them what he needs to sustain an existence that is at its core so very lonely. The last two scenes are incredibly moving. Interesting early or first performances for Cicely Tyson, Stacey Keach, Sondra Locke and Arkin is superb.

This is the second most memorable movie of my life.

This and "Splendor in the Grass" are the two most memorable and moving movies of my life
