Read the book then hike to the top of Half Dome
The experience was awesome. The book gave me an added boost and determination to complete the hike to the top of
Half
Dome
. Yup, I had the guts to look down and peaked at the cave where the two guys died on separate occassions. It was an eerie feeling peeking in that cave. I was imagining that there would have been ample room for 3 to fit and insulate themselves from the granite walls. If Esteban and the other guy (who died) sitting outside were in the cave, they would be packed like sardines.
Inside the cave is a small window that has an awesome view of the valley. I plan to go back there next year. This time I am going inside the cave to a have a feel for the unfortunate ones. By the way, I said a little prayer for the two poor unfortunate souls who died. Be sure to do the same thing for them if you make it to the top.
So if you havent read the book and intend to hike Half Dome, please read it. Especially if you are a first timer, you will find a lot of info about the trail, the history, and science behind lightning. For those who made it to HalfDome and will hike for a 2nd or more time, read it to get a fresh perspective of the top when you get there. It gave me chills imagining if I was one of the five facing the vicious thunderstorm.

Must read for every hiker (thru-hiker or novice)
I learned so much about lightning strikes and death on this book than elsewhere. For those who plan to hike
Half
Dome
, Mt. Whitney or any other mountain, this is a must read. It was slow reading for me in the first 3 chapters trying to digest the facts about lightning and deaths in
Yosemite
. Once I got to the part when lightning stuck the party of five, I could not stop reading and eventually finished the book from that episode.
Proud of My Cousin's Heroic Actions...
Linda Crozier is my cousin. Her Dad and my Mother were brother and sister. My Mother died a year ago in July, she would have loved to of been able to read this book. Our Grandmother used to talk about this story and told all of us about it when it happened. Our Grandmother didn't live long enough to actually read this book. I know that she is totally proud of Linda as the rest of the family is. After reading this book I respect lightening even more now. I am proud of you, Linda. With Love Your Cousin, Tammy

What a book!
This book gave me such a visual of the
Yosemite
Park and the trail to
Half
Dome
in particular. It discribed the history of Yosemite, as well as the history of each character in such a way that when you get into the actual event you "own" the story and relive the terrible night that they all went through. You also learn about the hero's of that night. It makes me want to go back to Yosemite, and hike Half Dome, and remember.
Don't Hike With Out Reading
I had heard bits and pieces of this story from good friends that were part of the Cage group. The full
account
is fantastic. The most chilling effect is the lifetime consequences for the survivors as a result of poor and controllable choices. The inspiring effect is the good will of good people that will choose to save your bacon whether they know you or not.
Finally, this is a very intentional rendering of the awesome beauty of nature on one extreme and the overwhelming power of nature that humbles all on the other.
A must read for ANY hiker.
