Delightful
I loved this book. I was born in 1942 in Denmark in the middle of the German occupation. Of course, I can't remember a thing from that time---but this book brought back all the stories my parents and my family told me of the five terrible years.
I have given the book to four of my friends for Christmas. I got it for myself on "Kindle", but I think I'll buy it in book-form, just to be able to hold it in my hand. This book is a keeper!
Delightful!
So much has been written about this charming title already that I'll just add a few thoughts to the chorus. Fist of all, this book is absolutely charming. I picked up one for my mother for Christmas and "pre-read" it this week. I'll be heading out this weekend to pick up more co

This is the best book I have read in years! When I saw that the entire book was written with letters, I was very dubious at first. However, it is charming and totaly engrossing. I have read it three times already, and each time I enjoyed it more. And I learned so much more about what happened in England and the Ilse of Gurendsy during and after World War II. The characters really come alive. So much, I would love to meet them in person. I wholeheartedly reccommend this book as an eceptional read.
Powerfully Gentle, Caring and Fun
This is one of those little books that you wish would go on and on. It feels like a letter from home. The characters are begiling. I loved the book so much I bought it on CD and was delighted that the readers are British. It was wonderful to hear them come to life in voice. This is a treasure and will have a place of honor on my bookshelf.

Very Good, but ultimately not what I was hoping for
There was so much hype around this book that I could not wait to start it. At first, I was surprised that it was a series of letters, and not in a conventional format, but I figured that I would get over it.
Unfortunately, I tend to read mostly on the train, in half-hour increments, and rarely sit down for a good long read, unless I am truly in love with the book. As a result of this, possibly, I never truly warmed up to the characters, and had a lot of trouble keeping many of them straight. The book never grabbed hold of me and drew me in, as I was hoping. I think the format was the problem.
The writing was excellent, and there were portions that were incredibly poignant and emotionally-charged, but those seemed to be few and far between. I never got to a point where I couldn't wait to see what happened next, and, for me, that is the mark of an unsuccessful book.
