A great book from an interesting viewpoint
This was the first time I'd read about the Roman occupation of Britain from a Roman viewpoint. Before, I'd always seen it from the side of the British, but this showed a totally new perspective. The mood of this book reminds me of rain, I'm not sure why. Even when the are running for their lives, it always seems to be in slow motion, but considering the ending, I think this is appropriate. This is the story of a young roman man (Marcus) who was distchared from the legions after an injury. After he recovers, he decides to go on a quest to find out what happened to his fathers

hispana legion and his father. They had been sent to subdue the rebellious tribes in Scotland; they were last seen marching into the mists, and never heard of again. It is Marcus's goal, with the help of his British friend Esca, to recover the lost

A story which I return to over and over!
As a student, I studied Latin. Many tedious hours were spent in the translation of the Roman classics, but the stories themselves were fascinating to me. What I like most about "
Eagle
..." is the humanization of the legendary Roman conquests. It is a fine story; embodied in it are disgrace and redemption, love, high adventure, and many other attributes of a fine novel. I first read "Eagle..." in the
ninth
grade, and at the age of fifty-two, I still consider it one of the finest novels I have, and still continue to, read.
One of the Best Roman Britain Novels
This is the first of a trilogy chronicling the episodes in the 'life' of a Roman
eagle
--used to top the standard of the Roman legion. Sutcliff brings the characters from long ago into your mind so vividly that you feel they are your friends. I wish that this would be considered 'adult' and not 'juvenile' fiction. It is better written and more informative about ancient Britain than many 'adult' fiction books. I recommend it highly for anyone interested in historical fiction, or anyone who wants a good adventure story.

Great Book!
This a wonderful book if you are studying Ancient Rome. It is about a young man named Marcus that is wounded while serving in the Legion (army). He decides to go on a dangerous adventure along with his friend (ex-slave) Esca. They are trying to recapture Marcus' father's
eagle
. Marcus' father had been in charge of the
Ninth
Legion twelve years earlier. The legion had disappeared and with it the eagle that represented it. Marcus tries to find the eagle and bring back the Legion together. It is a really good book but it can drag at times. At least consider it.

eagle of the ninth
When I was a teenager, this was one of my favorite books. It was a wonderful introduction to Roman history, a subject I have loved ever since. Sutcliff had a marvelous gift for bringing the distant past alive, and I am delighted to be able to add this dear old friend to my personal library.
