Great First for ELL
I worked with a little girl (ELL) who already had her basic reading skills; phonemic awarness, letter recognition and knowing what to do with words (in print). She just couldn't seem to read (even in her first language) with the level of fluency required for a student to pass from K- to First grade. This book captured her attention and we worked on the book in sections, first we read the section, then she had it as "homework". Each week when I returned to her home to work with her she would read both her "homework" and the preceeding section(s) in the book until at last she could read the entire book. This is the first hard back book, that she has ever read completely by herself so I have purchased this as a gift to her.

"What's that word mommy??"
My son is not quite 3, but is such a fan of Dr. Seuss. He gets stuck on one after another and wants the same one read to him every naptime and bedtime, for days in a row. The difference with 'Hop on
Pop
' is that he can recite most of it already. He walks around the house saying "Stop, you must not hop on pop!" or "went, tent, sent . . . he went into the tent . . ." I know he's too young to actually read -- but he loves to be read to, and picks up the rhymes rather quickly. 'Hop on Pop' is a simple Seuss -- but I think it promotes
early
reading and relationships.

Perfect for any age
My daughter is just 2 years old and she's been making me read it to her for about 6 months now. Obviously it'll help her read in the future, but I want her to have fun with
books
. And this is the perfect book to start off with, even if she can't read yet.
IDEAL READING TOOL THAT NEED NOT BE FORCED ON A CHILD--- BECAUSE THIS IS FUN??
IN A NUTSHELL: 'HOP ON
POP
' HAS EVERYTHING NEEDED TO GET A CHILD INTERESTED IN READING
1]- It is colorful, simple and attractive in its presentation of shapes, words and sounds.
2]- 'Hop On Pop' makes a kind of perfect sense for the very
early
reader who has a child's interests rather than an adults, which is as it should be.
3]- For early readers the words beg to be sounded-out and connected to the interesting drawings. This encourages a type of thinking that brings reading comprehension to the child, without the child or parent/educator forcing it.
BOTTOM LINE: A KIND OF MUSIC FOR READING COMPREHENSION TEXT
'Hop On Pop' offers an extreme organized simplicity that allows a young reader to enter a compelling and curious world. A child can gather the meaning of the book as he/she proceeds at their own pace, spending time checking-out and sounding-out the words, images and rhymes because they are fun. In the end, the early reader may reach a kind of full understanding of the book which might make the next book easier and faster to be understood.

Made my baby into a book-lover!
As other reviewers point out, this is an abridged version. Nothing in here about Mr Brown going out of town & coming back with Mr Black; nothing about playing all day and fighting all night. But this is a
board
book designed for little babies, and it's perfect for them. I will certainly buy the unabridged version as soon as my boy is able to read; two copies of this classic is not too many.
About this edition: The production of this book is dazzling. The colors are
bright
and beautiful and clean, the lines are jet black and crisp, and the paper is glossy and attractive. Each page could be torn out and framed as modern art. The huge type is a graphic unto itself, and I've noticed my 7-month-old staring at the words and letters, something he never does with smaller type. Another thing I love is that this book uses the classic Century Schoolbook font, with its clear and graceful letterforms. (Overly funky fonts don't help babies learn to recognize letters.)
My son is overjoyed every time we read this. When he spots it across the room, he'll stare at it, then look at me pleadingly. He's now learned the name of the book and smiles at the mere words "Hop on
Pop
." Dr. Seuss has taught millions to love words and reading (including me)... add my son to that list now!
