A simple and eloquent celebration of all things natural

Rick Bass transports the reader to a remote valley in Montana and convincingly portrays his love and affection for all things wild and natural. This testament to the environment never preaches yet may be one of the most powerful arguments to preserve that which is still wild. It calms the mind and stirs the spirit.

Of all of Rick Bass's books, this is the best I have read.

Bass paints a hauntingly beautiful picture of winter in a rural place. Reading it again has made me look at the skies over Vermont and pray for the first flakes to fall to crush the opressive heat of summer. He details a lifestyle that is light on the land, and worth emulating. I intend to read this book again and again.

Finding Himself in the Woods

Somewhere in Montana Bass finds himself. An engaging tale of becoming the man he always hoped to be, Winter is moving and an easy read. Readers will want to hide in the trees, chop some wood, and fall in love with chainsaws after this one. Wish he talked more about Elizabeth, his partner, instead of relegating her to the background. Otherwise, great read!

The Best of Rick Bass

I have read 3 other of his books and this one is the best yet. It gives a great flowing story of spending a winter in Montana.

I especially like the fact that he didn't go on and on about preservation. I like the fact that he raises awareness, but too often does it become dry.

Look forward to "Summer"

This summer I stayed at a lodge in the Yaak Valley. That should probably read the (italics) lodge in the Yaak Valley. Along with various t-shirts, the lodge sold this book, written by their friend. I liked the book a great deal for two reasons. First, I'd never been anyplace quite like the Yaak, and I wanted to experience it again in print. Second, the book, which takes the form of a jourmal, is an almost painfully honest expression of what it means to start a new life in a new place.
