Upbeat musical satire.

Bye Bye Birdie is a cheerful, energetic musical satire poking fun at show business and teenagers at the same time. Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) is a superstar teen idol parody of Elvis Presley, who's just been drafted. Dick Van Dyke is a songwriter who wants to be a chemist. His girlfriend (Janet Leigh) pitches the idea to Ed Sullivan of having Birdie give one last kiss to one teeenage girl, to symbolize all his fans, before going off to the Army - and singing a song by her boyfriend on Sullivan's show. Ann-Margret is sensational as the lucky girl. Bobby Rydell is her faithully jealous young boyfriend, and they make a cute couple. Sullivan appears as himself, Maureen Stapleton plays Van Dyke's overbearing mother, and Paul Lynde is Ann-Margret's father. The comedy varies from trite slapstick to hilarious satire. There are several memorable musical numbers, most famously Dick Van Dyke's dance with an animated happy face, singing "Put On A Happy Face."

It's always nice to say hello to Bye Bye Birdie!

One of the best movie musicals around! Dick Van Dyke, Bobby Rydell, Janet Leigh and Ann Margret are top notch in this family musical from the 1960's. I will say this movie is still popular after it first came out. It's a movie that will certainly make you "Put On A Happy Face"! Enjoy!!

"What's the Matter with Kids Today?"

Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson), a famous self-centered rock and roll star is about to be drafted into the military (shades of Elvis.) A plot/plan to make several people happy and rich is to have Conrad bestow "One Last Kiss" on a randomly chosen young lady from his fan club. The lucky girl is Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) much to the consternation of her steady boyfriend. This will be done on the Ed Sullivan Show. Many other lives and fortunes revolve around this plan.

Much more entertaining than the story is the interaction of the characters and this is a musical.

From play to stage this was well done. Dick Vandyke however though this was just vehicle for Ann Margaret. I look on it as the measuring stick by which all other versions, stage or movie are gauged by. I find my self singing many of the songs.
