Wonderful
This book is poignant and funny, joyful and melancholy, a remarkable mix of memories. A series of vignettes tells the story of Reichl's life from early childhood onward; together, they form an ecclectic stew which still holds together, bound by a common thread: food.
One of the reasons I loved this book was that you don't have to be interested in food to like it. While all the memories are food-related, Reichl expands them into more than this: each story has something to make it special. Whether she is the lone American in a French school in Montreal or the cook for a commune, her experiences are something anyone could find interesting--food is just a jumping off point.
Simultaneously, however, it is easy to see why she was the restaurant critic for the Times. She has a wonderful gift for imagery; her descriptions of tastes, smells, and sights are vivid and realistic, so if you like food you won't be disappointed. Ruth Reichl is, very simply, a wonderful writer; this is a wonderful book.

A delicious tale...
This is a wonderful book full of the author's colorful recollections concerning her
growing
up years. It is lovely to see the way that food has sculpted Ms. Reichl into the adult she became.
I most enjoyed the beginning and the end of the book. I think the slowest section is in the middle, during the author's tumultuous college years.
The recipes at the end of each chapter make my mouth water! I have a long list of meals I have to make now, as well as restaurants to try and people to meet. I'm making her wiener schnitzel tomorrow night!
