I read it from beginning to end, breathless, excited.
The way Terri Windling starts in the real world and gently moves us into a magical world is entirely believable. I felt as if I knew these creatures too, have seen them just around the corner, in the foliage of the trees or peering out from my chaotic garden. I have seen them in my paintings and wanted to jump up and paint to see who else was there but couldn't stop reading. I know too the time spiral on some level beyond fact or fiction. I hated to have the book end but devoured it nevertheless.
The desert will never look the same.
I held onto this book before reading it, not sure if it would satisfy the urge to "escape" fully into a good story, The story begins by subtly drawing the reader into the life of Maggie and what type of world she lives in. Divorce, submission to others, a rootless existence. Maggie is the epitome of a tumbleweed rolling through an endless desert. She, along with the reader, gets pulled into life in the Rincon mountains with each new discovery of magic under the mundane. True, some of the symbolism has been written about elsewhere, but the reader looking for an engrossing, imagination-provoking read will not be disappointed.

Utterly fantastic!
I loved the majic. This book brought the mystery of the desert to the reader. Windling writes flawlessly. I find myself wanting to visit the desert. I hope She writes another book along these lines... Please? Read it, you won't be disappointed!
I LOVE this book!!!!!!!!!
This book is Art, Myth, Poetry, Music, and Spirit in a landscape as clearly portrayed as an Ansel Adams photograph. Windling, give us more please! And Windling's publisher, PLEASE TAKE NOTE: BRING THE PAPERBACK EDITION OF THIS BOOK BACK INTO PRINT!!!! How else can I give it to everyone I know for Christmas this year??????

Beautifully written novel that works on several levels.
I devoured Windling's novel at one go. Windling's weave of magic and realism works powerfully on many levels. Where she uses myth and magic to tell a fantasy story, the magic is fresh, original and compelling. She also uses myth and magic powerfully as a metaphor for art, passion and love. The two uses interweave seamlessly. There are a couple of points where she drops the ball. Her characterisation of a couple of minor albeit critical characters (in particular Juan) is weak. We never really know why he made the choice leading to the ultimate conflict that he did. Which is why I give it 4 instead of 5. But, all said, it's a small complaint for such original and compelling writing.
