A favorite
This book gets a lot of use in my daycare home. Of course it's a favorite with the
train
lovers in the group, but everyone enjoys it. It's beautifully illustrated, so even the older readers like to look at it. The 8 year olds will remember the book from when it was read to them when they were younger and love to read it to the younger ones. The non-readers like the simple text and how the book flows. It's a perfect before nap time book.
Short and sweet
My son just turned two and has had a love of
train
s for quite some time.
He chose, and we got, the "
Freight
Train Board Book" from the library and he absolutely loved it. It was a book he carried around the house and looked at every moment he'd take time to sit down.
We had the book out for 6 weeks, the maximum allow time for a title to be out, and I knew he'd have a hard time parting with it so I bought him his own copy:)
It's a very short, simple, story with wonderful little pictures that completely engage my lil'guy ;-)
Note: "Inside Freight Train" (IFT) is a very nice accompaniment to this book.
Chase would keep both books with us a night time to read one and reference the other;-)
If you purchase "Inside Freight Train" you may want maintain control of sliding the pages as the started to fall apart after about a week of what I considered falrly regular, monitored, use:( It might last longer directly in the hands of an adult;-)

helping my 2 year old learn Spanish!
This is probably my 2 1/2 year old's favorite book. Not only is it about
train
s, which is his obsession, it is told in both English and Spanish. We are teaching him Spanish, and he loves for us to take turns reading each sentence in both languages. Our most read book!!!
PERFECT
This book is the greatest children's book ever created - it was always my favourite. Simple and elegant images tell the story of the
freight
train
. Highly recommended!
Tepid Reception By My Train Lover
My son (3) loves
train
s. I cannot tell you how many Thomas & Friends trains we have, in a variety of materials and sizes... and he loves train books, again in numerous supply... BUT he was very tepid about this book.
First, by three-ish who doesn't know what a tender and box car are? And then, what 3 year old doesn't know his colors?
So... 2 Stars for the 3 and older group..
Still, having said that, I think this might make an excellent book for train-crazy toddlers as there are a number of things that this book can teach them. Colors, names of train cars, and counting come to mind.
Three Stars then for any toddler *crazy* about trains. [Don't expect long term interest and don't expect all toddlers to understand that `blurred' pictures equate to going fast.]
Two Stars for anyone else.
