Very amusing but dated humor

For people that grew up with after the "Berlin wall", this film may need some explaining.

American rock and roll singer, Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) has a gig in the now extinct East Berlin. There he meets Hillary (Lucy Gutteridge). Hillary is an old German word meaning "She whose bosoms defy gravity." And finds out her father is a scientist held against his will.

The film swiftly becomes a mock-WWII spy, miss-identity movie. As with all comedies the joke skirts impropriety and this particular movie may be a tad dated. But it was well put together and has some nice songs.

This is the film where I learned a little German (Marcus Powell ...Little German). And Val Kilmer is in top form. When they make the soundtrack hopefully there will be Little Richard's tune "Tutti Fruitti." I was surprised to find out who the traitor was. So I would not say that the film was predictive. And they used real French names for the underground members. So what is the top secret?

Too Cuckoo to Miss!

It may take a few minutes before Top Secret gets you laughing but once you do you won't stop! You'll laugh until you slither helplessly off the couch onto the floor -- chill some beer and invite a few friends. Puns, sight gags, B-movie sendups, and a lot of really clever background stuff. Sure, some of the gags are a little sophomoric, but they just keep piling 'em on until you can't catch your breath. I'd forgotten how funny the French Resistance is -- listen carefully for their names...mon Dieu!

TOP SECRET

The seller came through with no problems.I would recomend him to others. B.H.

Airplanes? No, we're off to war!

The creators of "Airplane!" wanted another challenge, and thus they chose to spoof war films, rock films and anything else that came to mind. In doing so, they nearly lived up to the classic "Airplane!".

Strangely enough this is Val Kilmer's introduction to feature films. I know... He sings (yes, it's him), and really he fits fairly well into the overall spoof scene.

Ah yes, the plot. Well, the premise is that Kilmer plays an American rock-star that is requested to play at a German concert to help some elaborate plan; however, he gets more then he bargains for when he winds up beholden to a damsel-in-distress and an attempt to maybe even save at least a good part of the world.

Of course, this film is filled with mocking humor, but this time it appears gradually. At the beginning, the humor is more subdued and as time goes on the humor is more often, and thankfully, more funny.

Now, this is not a great film and if I could I would give it 3.5 stars. However, it still is pretty funny, and well, it's by the people who did "Airplane!" right?

A suprising laugh fest

I did not know what to expect when watching this for the first time. I had seen this video around for sale before, but I had no idea it was by the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abraham. And upon inspection of the credits etc.. and saw it was made in 1984! The cover made it look like a modern day movie, but i'm glad i finally go tto see it.

Top secret is typical Zucker/Abraham humour like there other films, Airplane(flying high), Naked Gun & Kentucky Fried Movie. This one however may not be the funniest movie they have done, but it is the funniest movie about a rocker from America who goes to Germany to be the first ever rocker allowed to perform in the country, but ends up tangled up with a woman who is the head of the underground rebellion and there misshap adventures continue from there.

What I really liked about the film was how it was shot in 84, yet it looks like a huge hollywood blockbuster from the 50's or 60's. Huge stages and looks very 'classic' in it's appearence. It really is a wonderull job in shooting it and the scenery and backgrounds are very nice... and thats coming from someone who never gives a s#!~ abou tthat kind of stuff!!!! IMO it deserves an award for it, you just dont see those kind of things anymore these days.

Overall, the comedy is definitly there. It is funny, whacky and crazy as you expect from the Z-Z-A trio. But what really suprises me is how the 3 of them dont seem to like the film very much from there audio commentary. They said the movie did nothing when it was released but has done well in the rental market! They say it's 'cause you can fast forward the slow bits and get to the interesting part and watch a 30 minute movie... nah, i thought it paced ok, so i dunno what there on about it. it probably just went up against something else that took all the focus off this one.

Overall, it's a great film for what it is. Garenteed to make the Airplane/naked gun/KFM fans laugh.
