All the charm and wit of a stage production.
Noises
off
! is a delightfully comedy of errors look at what goes into a stage production and what goes on backstage. Michael Caine is the director of a play that is just days away from showing. While rehearsing with the cast of hilarious cast members: Christopher Reeves, John Ritter, Carol Bernett, and that curly-haired guy from that hit tv show PERFECT STRANGERS.
What I liked about this movie is that they got the attitude just right. It really does feel rushed and confusing when you are in a stage production and the shananagians backstage are just as funny, if not a little funnier, than the antics going on onstage.
People flubbing lines, missed cues, missing props, re-appearing props, character conflicts, hidden romances and more! This is a classic comedy that doesn't stop with the laughs until the very end.
You'll love it!

"Yes, everything's nice and paranormal around here."
The movie version of the smash-theatre sensation,
NOISES
OFF
! is about a small theatre company and the hoodwinks, hijinks, and hilarity that occur as they travel across the country, performing their show, "Nothing On", on their way to Broadway. The audience sees the first act of the show performed three times: from the front of the stage at dress rehearsal, backstage later on the trip, and once again from the front of the stage over halfway through their tour. NOISES OFF! is one of the funniest plays about the theatre ever written and Peter Bogdanovich did a wonderful job of bringing Marty Kaplan's adaptation to the screen. This film had a perfect cast, from Michael Caine as director Floyd Fellowes, Carol Burnett as Dotty Otley, Denholm Elliott as Selsdon Mowbray, Julie Hagerty as Poppy Taylor, Marilu Henner as Belinda Blair, Mark Linn-Baker as Tim Allgood, Christopher Reeve, as Frederick Dallas, John Ritter as Garry Lejeune, and Nicollette Sheridan as Brooke Ashton. This would have been a wonderful movie to be a part of and seeing Christopher Reeve and John Ritter and Carol Burnett on the same stage together is pure comic magic.
I loved this film, almost as much as I love the play. There are some who might not get the humor involved, but even the most cynical person is sure to laugh during the second-act of the film, where the audience sees the behind-the-scenes antics. Meanwhile, anyone who has ever performed in a play themselves is bound to find the movie much funnier. NOISES OFF! is a hilarious film with a wonderful cast. It should be noted that this was Denholm Elliott's final film performance--he died the year NOISES OFF was released.

Noises Off
There's a specific comic sensibility one needs to enjoy this type of physical farce, but if you have it, this movie will keep you in stitches.
The casting is perfect and I was quite pleasantly surprised by some of the excellent performances! Very fun, silly, and satisfying. It is based on an original English play, so if you like their humor, get this.
Pretty funny, but long
After a while of watching this movie, I started getting restless. I'll admit, I did laugh quite a bit throughout the movie, but I only laughed hard a few times. I'm sure people who like watching plays and who are involved with acting will like if not love this movie, but watching this movie is pretty much like watching a slightly different act of a play three times in a row, and that's the whole movie. There's a lot of comedy through character and comedy in the situations the actors are in, but it's more like a humorous type of comedy rather than being laugh-out-loud funny. There are behind-the-scenes relationships between the actors that change constantly, but that's about as much as you get for a plot in this movie. This was a unique movie in that regard; it's just that it began to feel slow and almost tedious to watch as the movie progressed. It was definitely not one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, as other people have said, and I have a very open sense of humor. This is not a movie for everyone.

It May Play in Des Moines But Will it Play in Philly?
I give director Peter Bogdanovich and his game cast kudos for tackling the ambitious material here. The end result, however, is something of a letdown. The play within the play, a broad British bedroom farce, is not inherently funny. The backstage hijinks, though slightly more hilarious, are too manic and too confusing to completely work. Bogdanovich's screwball instincts don't fail him just the material he's working with. This would probably work better as a stageplay than as a satisfying cinematic experience. Not a waste of time but wait until it comes on cable.
