Gypsy Soars
Aside from the wonderful Patti LuPone, the full orchestrations and extra songs make this recording a must for any
Gypsy
fan.
Pattyi is great, but so is everyone else
How this show stays so fresh is a amazing - and Patti Lupone shines in a role she was seemingly born to play. Recording the songs cut from the show was a stroke of genius.
The role of a lifetime
This is the only recording of
Gypsy
that I own and the only one I will ever need to own. Sure, Ethel Merman's Rose is iconic. Yes, the score was written specifically for her. Okay, Bernadette Peters, Angela Lansbury, and Tyne Daly all received glowing reviews for their performances as the overbearing mother. But Patti Lupone is simply giving the most ridiculously phenomenal performance of her lifetime in a role that a novice would never know was not written just for her to perform.
So you have the fantastic performance by Lupone, not to mention one of the first performances by a Herbie that can actually sing (Boyd Gaines) and a stunning supporting performance by the perfectly
cast
Laura Benanti as Louise (who later becomes the show's title character). All three won well-deserved Tonys for their work. Plus, you get the most complete recording ever produced, with extra songs that were cut from the show during its developmental stages so many years ago. And hearing that overture, so full and lush, is a spectacular treat.
Don't pass this one up.

Patti is an energetic Mama Rose
Patti Lupone's Mama Rose in
Gypsy
exudes determination with every note. However, Miss Lupone somehow manages to communicate the seductive femininity beneath the brassiness. In Miss Lupone's performance, one understands why those who find her overbearing and a general nuisance also find her irresistable to a point. In the final number, "Roses's Turn", we get the full force of Rose's frustration. We understand why it was vital to her that first June, then Louise go to the top of the entertainment ladder. Miss Lupone's performance is of a piece, or rather, the pieces that we have been hearing from "Some People" on fit together to give us a picture of the whole woman. It is no accident that Rose's final number, especially as delivered by Patti Lupone, becomes the most engaging in the entire, wonderful score. The other performers on the album hold up their ends nicely, and all, including the orchestra, combine to give us a powerful experience of what is perhaps Jule Styne's best score and one of Stephen Sondheim's most appropriate librettos.
