Railroad Tycoon 4

It's clear that PopTop was trying not to "screw up" all the fan loyalty they'd built with RRT2. And I agree with everything written so far concerning graphics, etc. - that part is just great.

PopTop was also trying to take the obvious elements out of business sim play. Let's face it: business sims are sort of at a crossroads right now. I love 'em - I've played business sims since RRT1 in the early 90s, or even "Utopia" on Intellivision (giving my age away). Given the fascination with business sims, how many elements can be programmed:

1. Starting conditions: resources and constraints
2. Gameplay rules, varied to make gameplay interesting
3. Random environmental events
4. Opposing AI play

The designer has to make these things "seem" realistic and yet not frustrate players trying to climb a learning curve.

In that regard, RRT3 has done very, very well.

Great game

This is a really great game for a railroad "sim". I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in railroads or financial type "sims" or model trains. The game has excellent graphics, however once you get a lot of trains going at once (100+) it starts to slow down alot, and I have a fast computer (3 Ghz). However, I wouldn't let this stop me from buying this excellent game, as you can lower the graphic resolution and improve game play. I was successful playing it even on a 400 Mhz celereon.

It is a very interesting train game that I enjoy playing again and again so it was well worth the money.

Fun business sim

If you are a train nut, you will love the subject manner. I'm not much into trains but I enjoy the business aspect of this game. Example, you find a profitable cattle route, you build rails, buy trains, then if you have enough money you buy the cattle ranches and the meat processing plants and make a killing allround.

I love the aspect of raising the net worth of your character and destroying the wealth of the AI, which is very dumb but ruthless on the harder difficulties. You can buy and sell shares in your and other companies. The highest networth I got was 246 million in 1900 which in todays terms is 6 billion.

Things really slow down after 30 game years on a 1.8Ghz processor and the trains look a bit too cartoon like. Also, you cannot ride the trains like in RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, which is a bit of a letdown.

This is probarly the best tycoon sim out there. Not as hardcore of ugly looking as RT2, this is a sequal which is an improvment all round and is an ideal business sim which is also FUN.
