An amazing deal

I was a bit skeptical when I purchased this box set, largely because I doubted the quality of the CDs and the performances. I have been very, very satisfied with it, however, as it has provided me with an overwhelming compendium of all of Bach's works for a tiny cost. The performances are generally good, and 99% of people won't really know the difference between these and others. True audiophiles, musicians or classical buffs will no doubt find grounds for complaint, but the aim of this set is not to provide the definitive recording or performance of a piece, but rather the complete and comprehensive catalog of Bach's musical works, many of which are impossible to find. For my favorite pieces I do also own "better" versions, as they are not mutually exclusive with this set. I highly recommend this box set.

Awesome

Simply awesome. Not only is it a ridiculously good bargain at under $1 per CD (prior to this I was considering another complete Bach set for 8x the price), but to my surprise these are some of my favorite recordings ever. Holland has become sort of an epicenter of Bach these days, and this Dutch group does not disappoint.

The recording quality is excellent, and what I especially love in the cantatas is the authentic singing: no annoying overblown vibrato or modern rubato thrown in, just pure, sweet, golden tone. And I love the smaller orchestrations, you can really hear each individual line so clearly. I absolutely adore this box set, I think no household should be without it!

Bach: Complete Works - 155 CD Box Set

A wonderful purchase to begin a CD library of Bach with. For the excellent pricing that Amazon stores offer this product for, every Bach-baroque lover should have this set. The quality of the CD's I have listened to are all top quality. I observed criticisms in former reviews on this product before I purchased. Such as, the Cantata's where not recorded in the sequence they where written, or a mix of piano & harpsichord should have been used, rather than all harpsichord. I find these nitpicking. One can always purchase another version as required. I believe the idea of this set is to give a baroque lover the opportunity to buy a full set of high quality performance - recordings of Bach works at a reasonable price. I will point out though, that the first work I went to look up is not on the collection. This is Cantata BWV192. Most of this Cantata was a rework by Bach of his Mass in B Minor. A real Bach afficionado would probably tell you that there are other works like this left out to avoid repetition. Certainly not an issue to stop a prospective purchaser from buying this great work.

Bach Box

The complete works of Bach are a wonder! I have wanted this my whole life...it only took 40 years for the works to be recorded and the price to be manageable to my finances.

A surprising box set

Bach is my favourite composer, so I did not hesitate to buy this Box Set. All I can say is it is an insane bargain! The Cantatas alone are well worth the price.

Von Asperen contributions in some keybord pieces are just great.

Nevertheless, I consider the harspichord and organ recordings just decent. The performers definitely did not manage to transmit Bach's "mathematical style".

If you want reference harpsichord recordings, take a look at Trevor Pinocks recordings. For organ, Helmut Walcha is a much better option.
