Heart, Humor, and Heroics...and a Great Theme Song, too!
"
Here

the
Brides
" (oh, that name!) was a series that should have run for years; it was a
complete
ly captivating blend of action, adventure, romance, humor, and the '60s approach to 'relevance', with a top-notch cast. Sadly, poor scheduling, and a studio reshuffling that placed less supportive executives in charge, ended the show after just two
season
s...but seeing it finally on DVD will allow a whole new generation to discover how good it truly was!
Based, loosely, on Asa Mercer's quest to bring marriageable women to early Seattle, combined with elements from "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" and "Westward, the Women", the series focused on the logging Bolt brothers (brawny, loquacious Robert Brown, level-headed David Soul, and sensitive Bobby Sherman), who, to keep their crew from leaving Seattle, promise to bring in 100 New England women "of good character" to become their brides. Forced to borrow funding for the trip from greedy entrepreneur Aaron Stempel (Mark Lenard), on condition that he would 'own' their mountain if the women don't remain for a year, the series would focus on the adjustment of the women to a new life (particularly the romance between '60s heartthrob Sherman and Bridget Hanley), and the Bolts' continuing confrontations with Stempel.
Blessed with a remarkable cast (including legendary Joan Blondell as a saloon owner, Henry Beckman as a crusty sea captain, and Susan Tolsky in comic relief), Season One was certainly the best, both comic and richly human. Yes, the women were clearly more 1960s than 1860s in appearance, with their contemporary hairstyles and make-up, but the stories were generally
first
-rate, and Robert Brown a magnificent leading man. By Season Two, the series would introduce children in an attempt to broaden it's appeal, but even at it's worst, "Brides" never lost it's charm.
Guest stars in Season One included familiar faces (Edward Asner, Monte Markham, Lew Ayres, Will Geer, Rosemary DeCamp), and one rising star whose presence makes this Collection even more desirable to own...Bruce Lee (who didn't use martial arts, but did display the good looks and charm that would soon fill theatres, worldwide).
The bouncy theme music ("Seattle"), written by Hugo Montenegro, Jack Keller and Ernie Sheldon, would, by the middle of Season One, include vocals sung by "The New Establishment", which, unfortunately, is never heard in this collection (copyright issues?); the opening in Season Two would be sung by Perry Como, which I hope will be used, as it became a pop hit (Bobby Sherman would also record a successful version). I've been humming it for 40 years, so I admit I love it!
"Here Come the Brides - The Complete First Season" is cause to celebrate, reviving a terrific series that is just as much fun today as it was, back in 1968!

Brings back memories!
I watched this show as young girl! Re-watching really brought back memories. I enjoyed the
season
and thought it well worth the money for the joy it brought me to re visit Bridle Veil Mountain. My husband asked me if I was in Heaven, and I told him no, in Seattle!
Just as wonderful as I remember!
I loved this show when it
first
aired in 1968-70. Was so glad to see it released on DVD. My thanks to whoever is responsible. It is every bit as good as I remember. My only question is "when will
Season
2 be available?" I'd love to watch the rest of the series!!!
