Kleypas loves these two!
Lawless Lily is a delightful and vivacious contradiction to the usual heroines. She is not for one minute bashful, blushing, or naive. She works the fellas around her pinky finger and shocks the matrons of the ton. She is tolerated because her antics are so amusing but if they only knew about her past...maybe they woudn't.
Alex, Lord Raiford is a man sealed off from love by loss. When his fiance died the part of him that was light and winsome was sealed tightly leaving only an impervious shell that he keeps him safe. Nothing would crack his wall of safety or his steely heart so when the realization that he must indeed marry he chooses a safe, pretty, English doll to foist his upcoming heirs upon. Just so happens that this doll is Lawless Lilly's sister.
Lily realizes that Raiford is a complete beast and will not do for her gentle sister and sets out to sabotage this union. Sparks and tempers fly immediately. Raiford is not only threatened by her...he is shaken to his very safe little core.
This book is a masterpiece. I can't get enough of Kleypas.
You
know that she really loved these two characters just by reading the effort she put into them. It is a constant, edge of your seat, smouldering romance fest that won't disappoint you.

One of my favourites!
I've read all of Lisa Kleypas' books, and this one if by far my favourite! Unlike her other books, this one doesn't have a churned out, cookie-cutter feel.
You
can tell that she took time developing the story and characters.
Lily and Alex are a great couple. They have an immediate attraction that sizzles off the pages. Lisa Kleypas has filled this book with witty dialogue. I couldn't help but turn each page in anticipation of what would happen next. I highly recommend this book!
Thoroughly Enjoyable
I've read other novels by this author, and this one ranks with her best. What I particularly liked was the fiesty, distrusting heroine who is finally won over by the decent hero; Lily and Alex start out disliking each other, and the tension between them fairly crackles. Furthermore, Lily has a few flaws and has made a few mistakes, which makes her much more believable and human. The fast-moving plot keeps the reader engaged, and the ending is very satisfying.
Well done, and highly recommended.

I'm split on this book, did not like 1st half much, but did like 2nd half quite a bit
I don't know what it was about this book, but I have such lukewarm feelings for it. The first have of the book, the characters were always in such an uproar, I felt like I was watching an episode of Jerry Springer, it was that awful. Except for 1 or 2 scenes, like where Alex saves Henry from his sadistic boarding school headmaster, I didn't care for much of what was going on, and it caused me to have trouble caring much for most of the characters.
Now, the second half of the book, I liked very much. Once Lily realized there was never going to be a relationship for her & Derek Craven (Dreaming of
You
, the slightly better sequel to this book), the story started to take off, and I actually started to like & care for Alex & Lily. At first, she resented Derek (Lisa Kleypas says he's her most beloved hero) for practically pushing her at Alex, but in the long run, of course, it was most definetly worth it. Once Lily finally tells Alex about her search for her stolen daughter Nicole, which she should have done before she even married him, the story really took off & grabbed hold of me at that point. It was good to see that Derek Craven was not the only man with some money & influence in town, and within 2 days of her admittance to Alex, he succeeded in bringing
Nicole home to her, her fears of his rejection turned to dust.
The silly chit!
I do like how, in the sequel, Lily's 'relationship' (which is purely platonic) is used in an interesting way: Joyce, who is trying to make Sara jealous, tells Sara that Derek is Nicole's
father. It was a stroke of genious, but I would like to have seen this part of the story go on a bit longer, but instead,
Lisa Kleypas decides to have Lily tell Sara right away that Derek is not Nicole's father. (Joyce turned out to be another sadistic, cruel character in that book, not to mention the shocker when we find out she is bi-sexual).
Anyway, on the 1-10 scale, I'd put "
Then
Came
You" at about a 9.3. Good, worth my time, but barely, and only because of the latter part of the book being its most outstanding portion.
I am glad I stuck with it, even though I had to wonder there for awhile if I would have what it took to do so.
