A reference to all nautical books outhere.

This book teaches you the basics, and beyond on every nautical subject you can think of. It is used as a reference for other nautical books outhere. It's fully ilustrated with pictures, diagrams, and drawings. Many people think this book is the bible of boating. Safety, rules of navigation, docking, and navigation are thoroughly covered. Although you won't find specifics as to electrical or other specialized subjects, it does give you the basics, and priciples behind it.

common sense should prevail

I was talking with a cruise ship captain in Key West, and he brought up Chapman's guide to piloting. We were discussing rules of the road, ie, under sail has right of way over ships under power. Being the captain of a large cruise ship, he said, "Ask yourself, is it easier for a sailboat to come about to avoid a collision or is it easier for a large ocean liner to stop before he hits you?" Therein lies the true wisdom of rules of the road: the bigger vessel will win every time. If your boat is easier to handle and can get out of the way sooner, be polite and make the first move long before it becomes an issue. Although Chapman's is the authority on rules of the road, common sense should prevail when rules come in conflict.

A must for all seamen!!!

This book has everything. It's a great reference for any type of boating. All you need to know to enjoy the water is here. As a member of the United States Power Squadron I found this book to cover all the basics for good seamanship, navigation, and water safety. This book is worth the money.

An excellent update of a classic reference

The quality of presentation of topics of interest to boaters is excellent. Good illustrations and clear explantions typify this latest edition. The sections on boat handling and navigation alone are well worth the price.

Excellent book for recreational boaters

This is an excellent book for all boaters. As a comercal captain, I found this book as an excellent refrence book for all general boating information. It does lack the more advanced information, but this information is generally not needed for a recreational pleasure boater
