Outstanding

I have been using the Panasonic DMR-EZ48K Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder/ATSC Tuner for a couple of weeks now and could not be more pleased with the unit. Purchased it as part of my preparation for the all digital conversion of over-the-air TV in February. (Have NO cable or satellite TV service). Have an older NTSC Panasonic TV set and now using the converter box on the TV, I can watch digital TV on the old set and record a different digital program on the recorder (DVD disc) simultaneously for viewing at a later time, just like I used to with analog and VHS tape. It helps to be computer savvy as the new equipment programs much more like a computer than the old analog equipment did. I plan on working on my antenna upgrade next as I am in a quite rural area, 50 miles from transmitters, but the picture quality, useability, price online, and speed of delivery from the supplier was outstanding. Highly recommended.

Jury is still out on this baby!

The first one arrived dead. Kudos to amazon for quickly replacing it!

The thing is slooowww to boot - but it does get there. It handles my old fragile vhs tapes frighteningly fast, but so far hasn't destroyed any. Seems an effort to make vhs respond like dvd by improving speed of ff and rewind.

As I always start it from scratch, I tire of waiting for the power up boot and time setting sequence.

Slow to transit from analog to dtv channels - but once analog is gone, this is not a major drawback

On the whole, a fair effort in an emerging new technological frontier, but needs more work - and none of these things is very durable.

BIG plus is dvd-ram compatability. Without that, it is awful hard to edit recorded dvd material (cut out commercials, etc.)

A nice unit overall

The DVD part of this unit delivers a very nice picture. The VCR part leaves a little to be desired. The picture looks a little fuzzy but that may be due to the old tape technology. Also, with the power save option on the unit seems to take forever to start up. It's much fast to start when the quick start feature is working.
